An ethos I strove hard to comply with during my entire  career...

Seemed to come naturally!

There's an old management nugget that says: "Pay peanuts, get monkies"....

Often true, but Mercedes currently have such a superior car they could probably get away with that. Why pay a sh*tload of money if it's unnecessary? Unless, as others have pointed out, there is some sort of marketing advantage in having Hamilton, which I find doubtful.

And next year, they may have a less superior car, but still a superior driver.

Possibly, but I doubt it. I think the momentum they have now will carry them through the next year and probably beyond. If I was Williams I would be chasing a driver like Hamilton because they are knocking on the door and a top driver could make the difference. Unfortunately they can't afford him.

Ehh, ultimately it will boil down to whether or not Mercedes need Hamilton around.

I would wager that Mercedes have many options at their disposal though. They have a rocketship that most drivers on the grid would be able to finish P1/P2 most races.

I agree. I think the contribution of the driver in the equation is overstated. It makes a difference when cars are close, but Mercedes must be spoilt for choice in drivers at the moment. Hell, didn't Senna offer to drive a Williams for free in 1993 (even if it was a bit tongue in cheek)? There must be drivers queuing up to drive for Mercedes right now.

Every Mercedes car sold reportedly brings in $3.3k in profit. Hamilton should sell about 12000 cars per year to break even at this salary level. Merc F1 caps and t-shirts with his name should bring this number down some. I know there are more Hamilton fans than this, but how many will buy a Merc?

Where did you get that 3.3k Figure from?

i think it will all boil down to if hamilton wins the wdc this year, if he does then he will get what he wants end of. i know the manufacturer wants the wcc but it is the wdc which is most heavily marketed.

If rosberg wins the wdc i can see hamilton going redbull / ferrari  in 2016.

I think the greatest benefit in having Hamilton in your team might be that he doesn't drive elsewhere. It's been obvious over the years that he can pull one out of the bag anytime, given a half decent car, so he'll be a ever-threatening pain-in-the-a** if he drives for a rival team. At the same time, the value of having him drive for your team isn't quite as obvious, because for one reason or another, at the end of season when points are counted he never makes much of a difference over his teammates, occasionally even getting outscored by generally lower rated and lower payed teammates.

All that has to be weighed up when deciding how much he's worth. Not as easy as it looks on first sight, I would say.

The safety car did not drive from last place to 3rd.    It wasn't luck that allowed him to pass to get to the front.  If you want to make the happenstance of the safety car to be responsible for *his positive result, and not Nico's lesser result*, then you have to apply the same reasoning to Nico's "luck" in having success when Hamilton had the bad luck of mechanical failures.  He capitalized on his situation, he didn't just cruise into 3rd place just because of the "luck" of the safety car.

I didn't say Lewis had luck in where he finished compared to Nico. I said Lewis had luck in where he finished overall. If you don't understand the part the safety cars (not just one) played in that, then that's your problem, not mine.

I'm done discussing this with you.

With Newey now handing off the ropes an engine that may or may not be up to par next season... It's a major leap of afaith to think RedBull will be a top 3... Surely McLaren Honda could be a serious contender.. and Ferrari will get it right sooner then later.. MGP will not just fall back either.. so I see ) being 4-5th.. as real possibilty.

I was thinking the same thing. He's said quite a few things lately which give me that impression.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the likes of Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari close the gap to Mercedes over the next 2 years.

It seems that we have gone adrift from the OP, therefore, This thread is closed. IF further revelations come to light, either PM me or another Mod and we will review.
