Since we've got some time to kill before the next race, I thought some might want to weigh in on how the season might have looked. The Mercede engine obviously has a big advantage, and the Mercedes team is running away with the championship; and Williams are looking much stronger than usual. But what if all of all of the power plants were essentially equal in performance. How much would the picture change?

My thoughts are that Mercedes would still be leading, but Red Bull would have won more than 2, and maybe Ferrari could have taken one or two. McLaren, on the other hand, would look even crappier than they do now. But I'm sure there are some out there with boatloads of statistics and time on their hands to approach this more scientifically.

What do you think?

We would probably have a similar season to 2013, with only Williams swapping places with Lotus compared to 2013.

I don't think McLaren is benefitting as much from the Mercedes engine as the other customers. No proof, but Mercedes HPE seems to be doing the minimum required by their contract rather than working as a true partner.

Another way of putting the question would be how would the 2014 field look like if we still racing with 2013 regulations. Then we had roughly similarly-performing engines. I guess Mercedes would have still taken a further step forward, Williams as well, while Lotus seemed destined to drop back somewhat. Perhaps a close championship battle between Mercedes and Red Bull?

My humble opinion is that, if all the engines were equal, Red Bull would have won most of the races.
