So why were people rooting for JPM to win, if he deserved a penalty for nudging a tyre forward in the pits?

These threads are filled with JPM fans, myself included.  However, it takes a really, really hardcore fan to not see how rules today were flagrantly selectively enforced.

Somehow it all fades in comparison with the news that the winning driver was taken to hospital post-race with possible dairy on the brain.

Will Power forced to see a doctor after rivals celebrate his win by shoving cream puffs in his face

It had to be Will Power, didn't it?

Some teammates settle for the too-hard slap on the back or veiled comment about team favouritism. Not so for the Pudding Assassin.

Here's my take on the Indycar points:

1st place 50

2nd place 40

3rd place up to 9th place: they get some amount of points, which means that they can't jump too far ahead or drop too far behind their rivals.

10th place (a bad day for a driver you are actually making an effort to count the points for) gets 20 points

20th place (hey, thanks for showing up!) gets 10 points

Won pole, led most laps, led a lap: ~ 0 points.

Verizon P1 Trophy is then easily explained as being:

1.  Points from above.

2.  Thown into a hat.

3.  Draw one lot = P1 trophy points....

4.  But not so fast.

5.  Multiply by rating of the girl with the big tits in the audience.

6.  Subtract the result of 5 from the result of 5.

7.  Here have a shiny thing.

Just finished watching this a few minutes ago; thought I'd spend a moment to get caught up on here:

A remarkable day's racing. Marc Marquez is beaten and Will Power isn't.

Hadn't thought of it this way--remarkable indeed.

It is. It's a part of Indycar's allure. It is fun. Something that a lot of motorsports (and sports in general) forget. But my god, is it surreal sometimes.

'Surreal' is precisely the world I've been looking for to describe Indycar--the perfect word to describe that moment of sheer WTFery that confuses as much as it enthralls.

Somehow it all fades in comparison with the news that the winning driver was taken to hospital post-race with possible dairy on the brain.

See above. :p

All in all, an enjoyable race. I don't want to jinx Power, but I actually think he's got to be the favourite for the title at this point. Also cool to learn a little bit more about Hawksworth--good to see there are still drivers out there who make it the old school way.

Sonoma should be good but I'm actually looking forward to Fontana more than anything, even though I may be busy working a race that weekend. Hopefully I'll be around for at least one of the last two races.

Reading an item in Robin Miller's new mailbag made me wonder -- at ovals like Milwaukee does the close field spread actually harm the racing? It's been the case for many decades that short ovals are follow-the-leader until the front of the pack reaches the back. But seeing actual racing break out whenever the quicker runners came up on Saavedra, I think we need more entries like him.

Anyone know Dennis Vitolo's number?

Good idea. After all, you are a "pay" racer, are you not?
