the only appropriate thing I can think of as an answer is:

(edit: just to make it clear, this was in response to the rumor of him debuting in spa)

The guy isn't even 16... Totally bizarre if this is true! I know he isn't British but it's hilarious that he can race in F1 before he can pass the driving test here!

WHAT

Does he even have a super-license?

Last year they arrenged a test in a 2 year old TR to qualify for the Super license. no problem for RB they have plenty old cars available.

You will be right as Kvyt got his license by driving a two year old Torro Ross car. Apparently the definition of 'current car' is not as fixed as I would expect from the FIA.

Madness. They seem hell bent on ruining his career. Give the dude time, he's barely out of nursery school!

Still, if it's true, and Lotterer ends up at Caterham as well, Spa is going to be even more interesting.

I think someone has probably jumped the gun here. Why would they promote Verstappen over Sainz Jr.?

I can't imagine Max replacing Vergne at Spa. He needs a super license meaning 300 km of driving experience in an F1 car which takes some time and organization. Furthermore the FIA needs to be informed in advance, there are medical checks needed etc...

An announcement for next year: certainly possible. Replacing Vergne coming weekend: no way.

I'm pretty sure this topic title will change...

Does he even have a driving license? Surely it must be just for some FP's if at all?

Seems Verstappen to F1 may be for 2015. Would make more sense. Either way, talk is there will be an announcement tonight.

I think the story of him replacing Vergne in spa came from Buxton misunderstanding Andy Hone's tweet (more precisely, the "#BelgianGP" part)

If this is indeed true, there will be a two-week period next month when there'll be an F1 driver ten years younger than me.  Now that's depressing!

Ha! A good case of putting 2 and 2 together and getting, well, something other than 4.

Classic Buxton. Remember his "FIA compliance must be stitched to [driver overall] collars" scoop?

He fits the eligibility requirements in terms of consistently high results in an F3 series, but he hasn't sat in an F1 car so doesn't have the mileage required.

Theoretically he could get the mileage under his belt across the practice sessions, but it isn't 1970 so they won't be issuing him with a Superlicence on Saturday morning ready for qualifying.

Any announcement will surely be as a Friday driver this weekend.

Well, that is at least a little better than a 16 year-old coming in mid-season.

It's official now - for 2015.  Still utter plain insanity. Far, far too young. His career could be over by 20!

I'd be fuming if I were Carlos Sainz Jr. (or da Costa - or even Esteban Ocon, for that matter)

I think the kid has talent, but... Way, way too early methinks.

I wonder where this leaves Sainz Jr. He is achieving the minimum requirement at the present time, which is leading the F3.5 championship.

Have they learnt nothing from his dad? I still feel he was chucked in way too early. Let him develop in F3......F1 is not the place to still be learning. I have no doubt of his talent though.

I honestly don't see the rush by Red Bull. Alguersuari was terrible when he was 19 but he eventually became decent when he had enough experience. Max most likely won't reach his maximum potential until his early 20s and if he doesn't impress within 3 years then he won't get the chance to show that off.

I don't blame Max for taking his chance though. There are no guarantees you will receive the chance to race in F1 again. Look at Da Costa, his chance disappeared when it seemed likely he would race in F1.

Too early. Sainz Jr will surely be furious at this development, and rightly so - a younger driver with less experience who only officially joined the programme a week ago getting the nod over him.

Since I am on record for harping on about the ills of bringing drivers in to F1 way way to early, let me once again post how this will only be good fro Max and Red Bull if Max is the second coming of Sebastian Vettel. I can seriously see no reason that they need to bring him in over Carlos Jr, if anything bump Carlos up and put Max in his seat, then let max show he is no da Costa.

I do understand that Max Verstappen may be the best driver entering the sport since Michael Schumacher, I simply do not understand the rush.

Yeah, I really don't get the hype either.

How many young drivers have had one great year in the junior categories, and then never been heard of again? Moreover, how many drivers from junior categories looked The Real Deal, but never lived up to expectations in F1? Far too many to list.

If he's as good a talent now as some are saying, well, he may be even better with a year or two in GP2/WSR. Happy to be proven wrong, but I feel it is far too soon, and as already pointed out, the scary thing is that he could be washed up by 20. :|

Perhaps because there was a tug-o-war between Merc and RBR for Max, he and his people used their leverage and swung a deal that included his making his F1 debut in 2015.  So perhaps RBR's hands are somewhat tied.  It does seem like great haste, not sure why.  Drivers and riders are getting younger and younger and RBR seems to want to push that.  Sainz, Jr. will hopefully get a chance through another constructor - he is still young, so his talent will out.

What of Vergne?

Wow, I can't believe this.. He's way too inexperiences and too young. He should have taken time to do at least GP2 and get some more experience. Would not be too much of a surprise if his career was over when he turns 20.. Not that I'd wish him that..

Red Bull might as well abandon the whole "escalator" thing if they're just going to bypass all of those currently on it.
