and what he did in the Simtek (a very well designed car with mediocre engine and very bad gearbox because it broke down after 12 laps or less.)

I could not find any images, but I clearly remember Murray Walker saying: "unseen by you, but seen by us, we have Jos Verstappen in 6th place! In a Simtek!"

So he's got to have a 'Max'-based nickname once he makes it to F1. Any ideas? 'Max the Axe' and 'Mad Max' are already taken. Go to it. :D

Two full days with Footwork/Arrows at Estoril (not Jerez), another two-day test (IIRC) with McLaren later that year, pre-season testing with Benetton the next year...

While this year Kvyat or Ericsson e.g. had only a few laps with a very unreliable car (remember the Renault dramas!) pre-season (which meant that simulation didn't help him that much as a preparation for driving the real thing) before they all went to Melbourne.

Of all the rookies only Magnussen was sufficiently prepared but I guess he didn't have as much laps under his belt as Jos in 1993/94.

About Ericsson and Kvyat you are right. But when you compare it to Jos Verstappen, they had plenty of time in simulators to get comfortable with the circuits, strategies, pitstops and everything. So I do think they are better prepared for F1 without the time in the car at the preseason testing.

In those days you had the GP2 game as a simulator. :)

Yeah well lets not get into that game, despite the fact that it released a few years after his debut, Jos needed to use the original version formule one Grand Prix if he wanted to use such a thing.

I played the first at my friends place until the second came out and got my own PC. but if that would be a good simulator then I missed out on my career as either driver or just setup engineer. I managed to put my car in the top 6 on grid and finish at highest difficulty setting even after using the mods to adjust power of the driver car to be similar to my teammates. It might help that i could spend hours tweaking my setups to perfection to fit my driving style.

When I think GP2 (the game), I think worn out 'A' and 'Z' keys. Specially 'Z'. MASH THOSE BRAKES.

GP2 is the reason I started watching F1  :D Had the game for a while and when on a random sunday afternoon I didn't know what to watch on TV I zapped by an F1 race. "Hey, I know this track... cool... let's watch". Hardly missed a race since haha.

So Max will do his 300km run next week and is set for his debut in Suzuka. He did some long runs on a simulator and the people with RBR seem to be impressed with his performance.

Thanks for sharing that picture Midgrid, amazing looking cars. I still find the Simtek the best looking car Jos Verstappen drove in.

PS

Regarding Max Verstappen rumor has it that he's driving today and tomorrow on Adria to get his super license.

Well considering the circuit has events starting thursday again they will most likely want to do it today and/or tomorrow so sounds plausible.

I don't think so! Berger had a slow puncture during the early stages of the race and so lost ground, whilst Verstappen charged up the order into sixth place before his first stop, passing the Ferrari in the process. Of course the photo could also be from practice or something. :p

How is Max's relationship with his mother given Jos was in court for attacking her? And Jos was in court for attacking his next girlfriend... good influence that one...

Well I dunno how good or bad it is but I know when Max was winning in FWS his mom called his dad to congratulate him, she was happy and exited.

And Jos married the other woman and they just had a kid. It got blown out of porpotions because Jos is famous and media love to blow things up. He even got financial compensation because the judge said the police had no right to detain him the way they did. So my guess is that the relations are fine.

Oh and he is also supportive of his little sister getting into karting. Just in case you wondered about that.

This picture was from last month when Max' sister drove his go kart:

His mother, girlfriend and Jos all in line. Enough with the attacking and bad influence BS.

Considering he made no mistakes I doubt he would need a reverse ;)

Looking forward to first comparable times on a friday session, since JEV won't bother driving a good race no need to focus on race setup for him, just focus on his own laps.

So this whole pit radio thing won't make things easier for the first sessions in 2014, does it..

indeed it won't for all rookie drivers on that track.

I think It won't be a problem for Max though...

I guess he will not know what he is missing.

But he will also not know how far behind the performance curve he is until out of the car. Experienced drivers will be more intuitive to the F1 Chassis.

Jos the Boss!

Max the Minor!

Just saying......

There is still something as the signs on the pitwal. Those are not banned as far as I know.

I am sure he will know he is doing fine while they hold out the P1 sign :rotfl:

So far he has shown that he is smart enough to adapt fast to how it needs to work, if anything he has his age as a advantage, he absorbs all the information like a sponge.

I wonder if he already gets a FP1 outing in Singapore. Suzuka was opted because the track is difficult so he can learn for next year, that same thing applies to Singapore. If he can get his license before next weekend I can see this happen.

I don't think a street circuit would be the best place for his first official run, to be honest.

I think that Red Bull made the right choice with Verstappen.

Ocon put his backmarker car in 3.5 series P6 in his first dry competitive laps in 3.5 series.

If the level of potential is fully exploited by Max it will be very fine.

Well I think they will still give him radio advice because the FIA cannot penalize a driver not participating  :drunk:

Ik do think Ocon is F1 material already. This weekends' performance may earn him a signing as testdriver at least.

well, it wasn't a walk-over for him this weekend... Not too convincing alltogether.

Scoring points on a wet week-end without knowing the car is pretty convincing in a very average car despite anti stall system activating 2 two times in first race then tyre overheating due to bad tyres pressure.

Then he had a bad enough crash in a drying track on slick with little knowledge of the car.

I don't think he was expecting in any measure to walk over the field.

I don't think that outings in 3.5 series will earn him a place in F1, he is moving in faster pace than normal in term of youth but not as quick as max.

Think fp1 in suzuka will be the first real show, if he can put in decent laps and not be too far off the pace he will do fine in 2015 then.

He has met the criteria so why does it take so long for the FIA to give him his super licence? It wouldn't surprise me if the FIA suddenly come up with a age limit or something :well:
