Government announces plan to build $10 million major motorsports complex.

Three years after the first revival of Bahamas Speed Week re-awakened the nation’s appetite for vintage auto racing, the government announced plans to build a major motorsports complex to be completed by 2016.

The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honorable Dr. Daniel Johnson, used the first ever meeting of the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) in The Bahamas this week as a platform to make the announcement of the $9 million complex that will serve as a multipurpose center, providing a facility for safe driving training for police, security and ambulance operators, recreational and racing cycling, recreational and competitive cycling, motorcycle sports, karting, even musical concerts and other events that create local and visitor attractions and opportunities.

...

Both Johnson and the FIA/NACAM Task Force Director, President of Bahamas Motor Sports Association, and Chairman of Bahamas Speed Week Revival David McLaughlin said the venue must be of a high enough standard to host signature events and could possibly be the site of the first successful Formula E racing (electric and emission free vehicle racing), an idea that intrigued Johnson.

If we can arrange a whip round between us, I'll suffer a trip over there for two weeks to provide an in depth report from a local perspective for you all.

Barbados where I grew up recently renovated their Bushy Park circuit. They have had Ferrari F1 demonstration events and recently Lewis Hamilton did a Mercedes F1 demonstration to inaugurate the event.

Cool. F1 and motorsport need more global exposure.

I think it depends on whether you feel you'd have more fun watching a street race next to some cuties or next to a dirty old man who keeps asking you if you want an RPG-7 on the cheap.

Tax free GP! The business owners can watch the race and check their laundered money at the same time.

In all seriousness, didn't they have a few serious races in pre revolution Cuba?

You could make a truly unique race track that runs by the beach like a video game.

10 million doesn't sound sufficient to even fund a pit complex. What do they have in infrastructure already lined up. I didn't read the story obviously, work is blocking it for some reason.

Yep, which led to one of the more infamous incidents in F1 history:

I've got family in Nassau and I've been going every year or so since probably 1988. I'd love to combine a family trip with some quality historic racing or sports cars... They'd have a very hard time drawing any real crowds for a big time event, but it could do well with historic events and cycling.
