I spend a little bit of time perusing the nostalgia forum at times and am rather disappointed to find that the early parts of the picture based threads and some of the latter parts too the pictures are unable to be shown.

I have tried running on various browsers and the same happens.

I realise this may be due to some of the pics being taken away, but I doubt all of them have been, any ideas why on some posts all the pics have a black x in the corner? As if I am missing some software or something?

The pictures aren't hosted by the forum, they are linked to other sites, if you get a black x the link to the image has been removed from the original source or the source is no longer there.

Unless sourced from an Autosport site it is because the pictures are not hosted by the forum.  If someone who has posted images subsequently closes their account with the hosting service, or the image is otherwise taken down, then unless they update the links you will no longer see the image.

Some of the posts are very old, and in some cases the contributor will have sadly passed away, which means the pictures might be lost to us unless someone else has them.

If the specific images you are referring to are recently posted, provide a link and I'll take a look.

FWIW I still have copies of all of mine which were posted on my old Atlas Gold Member account. Plus some of the 'disappeared' ones from Imageshack.

I would imagine the issue is related to accounts being deleted.

As you say guys, a lot of stuff is fairly old, and in some areas all are there, notably the bike nostalgia bit.

Shame as probably missing some great stuff!

If you mean user accounts here, then that is not the case. It has always been the case that accounts can only be deleted by admins but - unless specifically requested by the user - all their posts remain in place. So, as already explained,it's purely down to the original images no longer being in the place they once were.

I mentioned my Gold Member account: once upon a time, when you had 1000 posts here that entitled you to some free webspace. Lots of us used it for picture hosting. However, when Autosport took the site over that was withdrawn - which is why a lot of earlier pictures from some of the real veterans around here have disappeared.

FWIW, I assumed chunder27 meant Flickr, ImageShack and the like accounts being deleted.

So did/do I.

I've heard tell that one of those reduced the amount of space you could use without charge, and deleted/renamed your photos as part of the reduction process.

I've always preferred that sites like this one should allow direct posting of photos so that old threads don't suffer from all the above.

However one site some of us use has recently shown that, as there was inadequate back-up, after a hardware crash the forum and the photos could be recovered from the back-up but the links between them could not. Happily the hour produced the man - who managed to link a picture database of over 70,000 pictures to a forum with over 28850 topics.

Very good point Allan

But then you would probably have to start paying for site hosting as the files would be immense to hold a thread open for 5 or 6 years as some of them are.

And considering you already have to pay online for the Forix (for whatever reason) and the magazine (fair enough)  then I wold prefer the forum kept free.

Nothing to stop somsone sarting a forum and having enough file space to host a massive archive, but that would require some serious server space!

Hosting would also make for difficult discussions every time one of you posted an image without permission.  I can't see Autosport hosting anything which it doesn't control anymore.

The other problem is people moving their images around on their computers....some photo hosting applications do not like this when the upload link is lost.

I don't think I have lost many images in the 10 or so years I have been on here excepting for those from computer crashes, migrations and inadvertent/ill disciplined reorganisation of my files...

I am going to lie down now...  :drunk:

There's another reason for older photos disappearing. Some people link to photos stored on their own websites, which may have limited storage space. If they want to put newer material onto their sites, some of the older stuff has to go.

Burt Tim, most photo sharing websites offer a way to gain more storage space and regularly advise your usage state...

Very true, Mick, but I suspect most people with their own websites would prefer not to have the hassle (and possible extra expense) of using photo sharing websites.
