Does anybody have any idea of which carbs were used on the DKW engines used in FJ. I was involved in the supply of Mitter modified engines to Elva in 1959/60 but it is so long ago that I have no memories of the engine save that the middle cylinder ALWAYS overheated and power dropped of as the piston threatened to seize in the bore

Though having been involved in FJ almost from inception I don't have any recollection of DKW intake details.  but one can do a Google and gather some pretty good detail.

One of an original 3 Mitter front engine FJs exists in South Africa and has three Amals.  This sounds quite original as per thetiming of the Mitter FJs in the class time frame.  At a very similar time frame I had Amals on arguably the first 105 Ford to race in Oz.  Amals tune quite well to single ports and are quite easy to make working one one understands their pronciples.

There also are photos of DKW engined rear engine FJs available.  It looks as if one had a single side draft Weber feeding three uneven length tubes.  I suggest that inefficiencies in the inlet system were off-set by the inherent added efficiency of the added power stroke cycles, (minus two stroke problems of the day).

There is also a photo of what is likely to be a downdraft Weber sitting on top of a large volume plenum with three legs to the ports.  Quite likely more efficient than the side draft!

Regards

I used to have the Sauter DKW Junior.

It was fitted with a single downdraught Zenith AU4 carburettor and had a megaphone exhaust system that I think used the original cast iron exhaust manifold (I assume the inlet manifold was the original as well).

We had it dynoed and it produced 78 BHp.

It went to Tim Bishop who subsequently fitted a full race engine and even tried 3 separate megaphone exhausts, I'm not sure but would assume it had 3 Amal carbs.

A friend & i went to look at a FJ  DKW engined car with a view for him to purchase, IIRC it had a DD Weber, chamber & 3 tubes, he didn"t buy so only saw it the one time. no idea if it was a Mitter unit but the car was an Elva
