Very, VERY early days, of course, but with today's news about McLaren and Honda re-uniting, I thought I'd fire up the 2015 Silly Season thread

Team Principal: Paddy Lowe ; Technical Director: Bob Bell
1. Lewis Hamilton (signed for ‘13-’15)

Sauber C33Ferrari 057 1.6 V6T / Honda RA168-E 1.6 V6T

Scuderia Toro Rosso
Toro Rosso STR9Renault RS28-2015 1.6 V6T / Ferrari 057 1.6 V6T
Team Principal: Franz Tost ; Technical Director: James Key
18.
19.

Caterham F1 Team

What are your thoughts regarding engine supply, either by Honda or one of the other manufacturers. And which driver rumours are there for 2015 and perhaps beyond?

(Edit: changed Vettel's contract status.)

Wow, this must be the earliest start of a silly season I can remember. We are already talking about 2015.

Several drivers are contracted through 2014, but beyond?

Vettel I don't think moves anywhere before 2014, but Ferrari or Mercedes could still be on the cards for 2015.

I am not sure, but I think Rosberg's deal ends with 2014. Though I think he can stay on and become a true long-serving Mercedes driver like Hakkinen and Coulthard became for McLaren.

Button's situation will be crucial. He is contracted through 2014, but needs to up his game and avoid getting shown up by Perez to get his deal extended into the Honda era.

Does Japan has a up-and-coming young driver for a Mclaren Honda reserve/race driver role?

Shouldn't Vettel be listed at Ferrari too?

I think Frijns will do a full year GP2 in 2014, debut at Sauber 2015.

And I doubt Button will still be at Mclaren.

Kubica at Mercedes?

:p Wow, starting this thread nice and early?!? :rotfl:  :p :stoned: I don't think Vettel will go to Ferrari while Alonso is there. With the explicit No.1/No.2 driver system that they have at Ferrari, I don't think Vettel would want to go there until Alonso leaves. There is a possibility that Raikkonen could go to Red Bull. What about Bianchi at Force India or Sauber? Or Massa returning to Sauber (or going to Lotus?!?!?!)

Well lustigson, you seemed to completely ignore my information about Bottas being under contract with Williams in 2014 thread, despite the fact that I backed my statement by interview with Wolff. I hope this time you'll take me more seriously.

Swiss newspaper Blick’s veteran correspondent Roger Benoit said in Bahrain: "Yes, even Toyota is toying with a comeback.

"The Japanese have Williams in sight, and they could get Japanese favourite Kamui Kobayashi back in a race cockpit."

source

So the Williams should look more like this IMO:

Williams F1 Team
Williams FW36Renault RS28-2015 1.6 V6T / Toyota ? 1.6 V6T
Team Principal: Frank Williams ; Technical Director: Mike Coughlan
16. Pastor Maldonado (on a long-term deal through ‘14, perhaps with options)
17. Valtteri Bottas (current driver)
Kamui Kobayashi (may come with Toyota engines)

I also wouldn't discount the possibility of getting Mercedes engines by Williams. Mercedes may be looking for another customer after losing McLaren and Toto Wolff would perhaps like the idea.

I totally missed you post, Anderis. Sorry about that.

I fixed Bottas' status in the 2014 thread. And I'll add him in my opening post here, too, although I'll keep him in blue, since I'm not sure whether he's sure to drive for Williams in 2015, or if he has 'just' an option for that season.

I'm also not sure what does "long-term, multiple-year deal" mean according to Wolff. But OK, you fixed Bottas, but why did you miss the rumour about Toyota I was writing about in the previous post? IMO it's more likely that Williams will end up with Toyota, than with Honda. Sauber and Lotus were the only teams reported as interested in deal with Honda.

I felt that a single source publishing about something is a bit too meagre to include it in the list. If, say, Autosport.com or the BBC would publish about it — and I don't think they have (yet), or I must have missed that, too :stoned: — I'll add it to the list.

But don't worry, we still have 75% of the 2013 season to go, not to mention all of 2014 before this thread gets really serious. :)

Kubica joining somewhere. I still expect him to test this year a 2 old year F1 mercedes. If he will competitve then maybve even next season he will lands somewhere. But if not, then if his arm will allow, then I expect him to be back in 2015 (wow that would be something)

They certainly will try, I'd think. But is Vettel interested? It would be an interesting option for Vettel if he wants a new challenge post-Red Bull. Especially as if we assume Ferrari is blocked due to "no two no1 drivers" policy.

I think the 2015 silly season will be heavily influenced by the 2014 pecking order and we could see some significant changes, similar to 2010. As a result, it's a futile exercise trying to predict what will happen at this stage. I mean, who would have predicted Button to McLaren in early 2008?

@tgruener tweeted on 15th May : #F1 @WilliamsF1Team is considering switch from Renault to Mercedes engines for 2014. Lotus and Caterham also not happy.

So.. add that to 2015 silly season.

Williams might switch engine from renault to Mercedes as early as 2014... the reason is renault 2014 engine is believed to be the most expensive engine compare to other supplier; i.e mercedes and ferrari

Lotus and caterham too might pondering engine supplier change

How long is Vettel contracted? I thought I read something about him signing until 2016 at the start of the year, but I don't know if it really happened or was just rumoured.

Who will drive the 2014 McLaren-Mercedes? Danish newspapers only «know» the team for 2015: Alonso and Kevin Magnussen.

Anybody got more info on that?

It's appears to be a fantasy scenario (wish) they have dreamt up, based on cherry-picked rumours:

- Alonso has already signed for 2015.

- Button will retire at the end of next year.

- Perez will be kicked out.

Hardly surprising that a Danish newspaper wants that to happen.

From what I have puzzled together Lotus is working hard on increasing Reanults involvement in the team. Renault don't quite get maximum exposure from supplying engines for the dominating team, as they are badged Infinity - and might be looking to get closer involved with another top team. If that's a possibility it makes little sense for Lotus to become a customer-team for Honda.

Problem with the current "deals" with Vettel/Alonso/Hamilton. They dont really mean a lot, they could get out anytime they wanted to, Fernando only needs Santander to sort it out, if Mercedes sinks into the midfield then XIX entertainment will pay off Mercedes to put Lewis somewhere more profitable in the long term for them...... Sebastian im not really sure of but id be surprised if a soon to be 4 time WDC didnt have some sort of sponsor willing to pay his way in/out of teams.

Much of the silly season depends on the performance between Merc/Ferrari/Red Bull, the rivalries between Vettel/Ricciardo (we have no idea how good that kid will be yet) & Alonso/Raikkonen. So much depends on 2014 that starting the silly season now is just, well..... silly.

My suggestions:

Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton - Nico Rosberg

Red Bull Renault: Sebastian Vettel - Daniel Ricciardo

Ferrari: Kimi Räikkönen - Nicolas Hülkenberg

McLaren Honda: Fernando Alonso - Kevin Magnussen

Williams Mercedes: Felipe Massa - Valtteri Bottas

Force India Mercedes: Sergio Pérez - Felipe Nasr

Toro Rosso Renault: Daniil Kvyat - Carlos Sainz jr.

Sauber Ferrari: Jules Bianchi - Giedo van der Garde

Lotus Renault: Pastor Maldonado - Stefano Coletti

Haas Ferrari: Alexander Rossi - Raffaele Marciello

Marussia and Caterham will withdraw.

If I had to make a prediction at the moment, I'd say Mercedes (Hamilton, Rosberg), Red Bull (Vettel, Ricciardo), Ferrari (Alonso, Raikkonen) and also McLaren (Button, Magnussen) remain the same. Williams (Bottas, Massa) could remain the same too. If this all materializes, it almost certainly sees Hulkenberg at Force India for another year. And perhaps Grosjean still at Lotus though I think he could be looking for another team. I am intrigued to see if Bianchi could move up the field. Maybe Sauber-Ferrari?

However, it could be the last season for both Mexican drivers (Gutierrez and Perez), Sutil and I have doubts about Maldonado too - maybe PDVSA gets fed up of their bad deal with a struggling team. Caterham could change both of its drivers like usual. Vergne is very doubtful as well.

Among rookies Sirotkin is going to be a stronger contender for the Sauber seat, possibly alongside Bianchi, making an all-new line-up for the team. If Sainz does well in FR3.5, he'll be alongside Kvyat. Vandoorne could join Force India alongside Hulkenberg if he does well in GP2. Marciello could replace the upwards-moving Bianchi at Marussia-Ferrari if he does well in GP2.

Not a very exciting prediction, I know. I'd like to put Frijns somewhere but can't see how, and I think Ferrari might decide against continuing to fund Bianchi's career at extreme expense. Gutierrez, Sutil and Ericsson would go home in this scenario, too.
