That was the Smith Climax, Barry, of which you posted some photos for me years ago, the special with an FWB and Velocette gearbox. Several cars were running at relatively slow speeds, but that is not a new phenomenon.

I thought the meeting was excellent. The entries for the Juniors were brilliant, some rare birds there. It was a shame that the big GT race with 2 drivers was shortened from the hour, but it saw some real racing. I wonder where the Cottingham's green Shelby Cobra Coupe came from, as a sister to the blue one, and to see the big V8 Maserati coupe all painted up was a joy.
Goodwood was purpose made for 3 litre Capris, Rover SD1s and Camaros, and the very cold weather meant that the CanAm cars were a real handful, with serious skill being shown. The McLaren GTR demo was impressive, some drivers pressing on very well, as were those in the high box F1 cars. The noises were wonderful.
The F3 screamers put on a good show, all beautifully turned out, and with that super sound.

there was no front engined Junior race at the 73rd MM

the Junior race was for rear engined drum braked cars....

but yes, there were some very rare and some unique cars in that race

My apologies for the revision of the Junior engines' location, I was thinking at the time about mentioning the F3 cars and clearly failed to adjust the thought process. Your Junior looked superb, Rudolf, btw.

Heraldic fact: when Sutton Coldfield was incorporated into the City of Birmingham, Brum needed a new coat of arms.  Sutton's contribution was adding a cross to the shield - and a bishop's mitre, which represented Bishop Vesey.

And the car badge is a stylized mitre.

Having just seen the front-engined F.1 car race, I have some questions.

Also, the Diffey Maserati looked a bit odd around the radiator opening or am I mistaken?

Could you possibly be referring to the Rettenmaier 250F, Barry?

No, of course not, Tony. I'm very familiar with this frontal treatment.

I just felt that the shape of the intake on the Diffey car looked different to what I expect a 250.F to look like.

A sad story for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, lots of damage to those "vintage" cars.

Some other questionable stuff and terminology in the story as well.

Well at least they didn't confuse Mass with Stuck, as in the MSN report of the incident discussed above. The link below contains a sequence of photos showing the collision (scroll along to photo 2 for the first shot in the sequence):

Very sad for all involved, but £4m for something created by an American mechanic out of the wreckage of a Gullwing? I don't think so.

That was my first thought as well, it even looks like a Gullwing with the roof cut off, but is there any more info on the car? I had a quick Google and couldn't find anything that wasn't related to the recent Goodwood mishap.

One might have hoped that a UK broadsheet newspaper could have got the fact correct that a vintage car dates between 1919 and 1930

Sadly, your Soaraway Maily Telegraph has not been worthy of the epithet of 'broadsheet' for some years. Ironically, it's the only one of the big four which is still published in broadsheet.

The t.v. commentator says that the event was a sell-out but there looked to be only one Lavant grandstand, the fences in front of it didn't seem that busy and the Madgwick bank was relatively sparsely populated compared with the Revival.
Given the cost of entry for spectators, I can't say that I am surprised - personally I think that the admission prices were scandalously high. Right crowd and no crowding I suppose.

The numbers are restricted, and far fewer than for the Revival, Barry. The idea is that it isn't the Revival, but a Members' Meeting in the spirit of Members' Meetings of yore, but with a limited number of tickets on sale to non-members. As it was a sell-out, and I'm not surprised, Goodwood must be doing something right

Having attended both days from 8am onwards, "unless I'm very much mistaken" Sunday felt considerably less well attended than Saturday......

However, this familiar face was wandering around the paddocks unaccompanied on Sunday....... :smoking:

Many thanks, Alan, so it is a replica. Does the job for me though. I know the Cottinghams are DK Eng. the D & K being the initials of David and his wife ISTR. One of the sons raced a Ferrari, possibly an 860/857 type at the Revival a year or two back, and very effectively too. The Daytona Coop was a super result for young Joe Twyman who is developing into a very rounded and versatile driver across the piece IMHO. The Porter SDLS, the second S being for Scrap, is well documented in American Vintage Racing 1950s/1960s book.
I forgot to mention earlier what a delight it was to be able to look closely at the Richard Bolster Special, beautifully turned out and settling in after a rebuild, a piece came adrift in the blower apparently, and they are trying to get it set up properly. The owner seems a very nice chap.

Barry, re the Diffey 250F nose, there is a good 7/8ths frontal shot of it on the GRRC website galleries. If your e mail is the same as before I will send it to you to look at. I know what you mean about the slight variation, perhaps it is a particular 250F iteration. If your e mail ahs changed pls pm me with the new one. I cannot post pics or links.

Here is a link to a Hawthorn Trophy gallery. Photo no.2 shows the 250F clearly. https://grrc.goodwoo...E1fQyZMS4E61.97

While the height of the radiator opening may be slightly tall by 1957 'works' standards, it doesn't look overtly wrong to me. I'm sure Barry will recall that there were many manifestations in period, one only needs to scan through Mr McKinney's book to verify that. I believe that it is actually #CM5 and is described as '1956' so doesn't have a period look to replicate

More details of ITV's coverage of the Members' Meeting

ITV TO BROADCAST HIGHLIGHTS OF GOODWOOD 73RD MEMBERS’ MEETING DURING EASTER

Highlights of the sell-out Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting will be broadcast on ITV for the first time in April.

The one-hour-long show, which has been produced by Aurora Media, will be broadcast in a prime time slot on ITV4 and will be presented by Amanda Stretton with commentary from David Addison.

The programme will be first broadcast on Thursday, April 2 at 2100 and then repeated on Easter Sunday, 5 April on the same channel at 1800. There will be a second repeat on Easter Monday, 6 April at 2345 on the main ITV channel.

The race action will be frenetic, with extended highlights of the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars that featured tin-top heroes such as Matt Neal, Jason Plato and Andrew Jordan in machinery as diverse as a 5.7-litre Chevrolet Camaro and a Triumph Dolomite Sprint.

Highlights of the Bruce McLaren Trophy for early Can-Am sports prototypes – the fastest cars to race during the Members’ Meeting weekend – and the Derek Bell Cup for ‘screamer’ Formula 3 single-seaters – which resulted in a photo finish for victory – will also be shown.

The incredible IWC shoot-out that pitched World Endurance Champion Anthony Davidson in a modern Mercedes Formula 1 car against a brand new AMG GT and the classic ‘Red Pig’ AMG 300 SEL will feature, as will footage from the McLaren F1 GTR and high-airbox F1 high-speed demonstrations.

There will also be insight into the restoration of the ex-Les Leston ‘DAD10’ Lotus Elite that took part in the race that bears his name, an interview with Mini master Nick Swift on his giant-killing antics in his tiny 1275 GT and a tug-of-war between BTCC drivers past and present for bragging rights ahead of the new season.

Many thanks, Alan, so it is a replica.

There were only 6 Shelby Daytona Cobras made, and they're about $20million each according to Hagerty, so any one you see racing now will be a replica/continuation - which is kind of the point of the replica I guess. Much better to bang up a £500,000 car than a £13 million one!
