Yäll forgot that these Pirellis are a step harder than last year¨s. So, it's a similar compound choice this year, only the carcasse colour is different.

Yep... not to mention that Abu Double finishes at night, so they probably want the tires that people can keep temperature in the most.  Plus that track is almost perfect asphalt, so it's way less abrasive than most circuits.  Degradation shouldn't be terrible.  Hammertime waits for no tire compound choice.

Yeah but there is also the extra torque this year to factor in.

Anyone looking at the tire compounds for Abu Dhabi as the reason one driver will win the title over the other is clutching at straws. The way it's looking at the moment, if there are no retirements in the next 3 races, Lewis is likely to have either a 17 or 31 point advantage going into Abu Dhabi. A nice cruise to 2nd would be enough in either scenario... but you get the impression it's not going to be that straightforward.

I have no idea if that's true or not, because I haven't kept up with how horsepower has changed compared to last year, or how gear ratios may differ.

But if you are just talking about the increase in engine torque compared to last year, then in isolation it is totally irrelevant. As I've said before, many standard diesel road cars have higher engine torque than last year's F1 cars.

My understanding, though happy to be corrected, was that with other rule changes making it more difficult to keep the tyres at optimium temperature (lack of blown diffuser etc). Which may not have as as significant an issue with last years engine, but with the amount of torque this year the effect was a lot more wheelspin on the rears compared to previous years.

Marussia to hire Glock to drive for Abu Double. He qualifies well and makes a stirling drive to be in 9th at the beginning of the last lap.

Hamilton won in Sochi, Texas and Interlagos and Nico came 2nd in Sochi and Texas but crashed in Brazil. As a result Hamilton has opened up a 49 point lead. His team decided to use a 6th unit for every component of the powertrain and to stat the race from the pitlane to ensure he has a reliable car. The idea being he would cruise into the top 10 to win the championship. However, things are not going well, Hamilton suffered a lap one puncture and is forcing his way from a lap down. He also has front wing damage from a collision during the race. Rosberg comfortably wins the race.

On the last lap he is 11th and is desperately trying to pass Vettel who is in 10th place after suffering a similarly appalling race. Hamilton tries all he can to pass Vettel but with front wing damage he has not got the grip. He frustratingly stays about half a second behind Vettel all the way around the last lap.

Unknown to the world, Glock ahead has hit trouble, his engine is cutting out due to an oil leak and is gradually losing drive. He is caught by Vettel and Hamilton just after passing under the Yas Hotel.

On the Sky Sports F1 commentary, Martin Brundle shouts "IS THAT GLOCK? IS THAT GLOCK GOING SLOWLY?"

IT ISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS THAT´S GLOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

supersofts a bit less comfy for Lewis in general, but I won't give it much thought, not enough data to suggest a definitive weakness on those tires....a lot can happen before then, a lot can happen then.

@Meddo just noticed, I'm not a member of St Devote? what nonsense!

I demand my membership as well as foreign affairs officer, last time I was here in Brasil @Interlagos with my Hamilton flag in my hands and surrounded by Felipe Massa fan´s and I stood my ground.

The tires until the end of the season, by the looks of it will surely suit Nico Rosberg more. But I¨ve seen some stunning drives from Lois this year, and I¨m not giving up hope

About engines. Both of them had their last engine (ICU and all) installed in Suzuka. Engines are planned to run four weekends (one of them just three), so both of them will have to re-use an older one for onc race. Although the FIA doesn't publish which particular engines used in the cars which weekends, it's very straightforward to figure it out from the part replacement and "number of engines used" reports.

According to this, Rosberg's best used engine is the one that ran just two races in Spa and Monza. It was supposed to run in Singapore as well but Rosberg didn't start the race, so it only has an additional Singapore Saturday in it.

Hamilton seems to have two engines that he could use. The first one ran a Melbourne Saturday, Malaysia, Bahrain, and Hungary Sunday, making it three net weekends old even though it was used four times (and we don't know if it was used elsewhere on Fridays). The other one is his Spa, Monza, Singapore engine. Although his team dismissed saving the engine in Spa, I bet they think otherwise now in hindsight. After all, if there's just one engine they wouldn't want to risk using four times, surely it is the one doing Spa and Monza.

I wonder if they'll consider installing a 6th ICU in Brazil if the circumstances allow, such as a big enough points lead to retain 14 for AD with a second/third, or other cars changing engines en masse making a penalty hurt less. Or do you guys think engines are no concern for Mercedes?

Just to throw a spanner in the works for Hamilton fans, Pirelli have now chosen softer tyres for the final races. For the COA they are now using the Soft and the Medium instead of the Medium and the Hard, and for Abu Dhabi they are bringing the Super Soft and Soft instead of the Soft and Medium.

If it's true about Lewis being better on the harder tyres this is looking very bad for him, place your bets on Nico.

Maybe Pirelli and Bernie have cottoned on to that and have decided to spice up the show? Either way it's looking good for Nico, this is going down to the wire.

Take it you're slightly worried and disappointed? I'm sure Pirelli haven't noticed the trend of Lewis dominating with the harder compounds and this is just a coincidence.

Wow. I've rarely seen someone getting this excited over tyre compounds

I think you read way too much in a few races where external elements played a role. Just a couple notes, in Monaco the race was won on Saturday, and we know how.  In Canada Lewis was ahead of Nico when he had to retire.   So yes, we're left with Austria which is the one weekend where Nico truly outperformed Lewis.  But I wouldn't read too much into that   ;)   I'm not sure after which race it was, but I remember Lewis saying recently he found the tyres slightly too hard.

What about a synchonised 6th engine with 2-3 races to go, every team has a new engine and a 10 place penalty for everyone means no penality for anyone

I think they'll be pragmatic. I'd say that there's a very high chance that many of the front runners will have to bolt in a 6th PU sooner rather than later. Merc will probably mirror that strategy with both drivers - at the same time. Ergo - no tears or (too many) toys flying out the pram.

If we look back, for now, everything else maneged to fail, exept ICE. What hapened to Lewis in Australia was a stupid bug. I am more concerned about some other parts, CE(control electronics), Gerboax...

Haha, this occured to me early season, but I figured that the sequential application of penalties (in FIA postbox arrival order) would make the results unpredictable even with a clever all-teams-included orchestration. And the carry-over... nice idea tho :)

Surely Nico would feel screwed over. He has no problems with engine allocation because of his Singapore retirement and that his third engine hasn't burnt down.

I get the impression that most teams are going for a back-sack-and crack within the next couple of races......

He'd feel more screwed over if an element of his drivetrain went pop at the end......

But that's the thing, he has a good engine barely past half its designated lifetime. Sure it could go pop with a slight chance just like anything else but it's not something he would want to sacrifice ten gridspots for. That could be his punishment now that I think of it though.

Lol! No way!

That's as much fantasy as Fred joining Merc.
