Why would he come back? The race was rigged in 03, he should have won WDC that year.

Apparently Juan Montoya was interviewed by the Beeb or Sky, does anyone have a link? I can't find anything.

It was the Beeb, at least that was where I saw him.

He seemed both more relaxed and more diplomatic than I've ever seen him before. No bad words about the current state of F1, he's just enjoying himself more on the other shore.

Funniest moment was he momentarily searched for a name and said "Roger" when he meant "Ron"  :D

Wait.... Did someone suggest that Kimi has charisma ...??? Are you schitting me Pyle?

Raikkonen has some substance which is charisma-like without being charisma. Something to do with how he can make himself fall asleep at will. A good driver for the more hypochondriac fans among us to support, because we know that whatever pressure or difficult situation or "for the love of God don't fuck this up Kimi" he gets himself into, you know he won't crack. It won't occur to him that you can crack, any more than it occurs to an electron not to be attracted to a proton.

He's Mr Reliable, although all you're entitled to rely on him for is to be an emotional void who gives the exact amount of performance he wants to. A racing god, but a polytheistic one who doesn't have any interest in the world domination thing.

I'd like to see him do more sports car racing, Indy schedule permitting. I wonder how many more NASCAR oval races he will do for Penske?

Well the definition of charisma is:  compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others.

And well:

I thought it was interesting he was a guest of Mclaren and not Williams. Just because of the way he left those two teams. Guess Ron Dennis doesn't hold too many grudges.

Maybe Dennis wants to signal to Alonso that he doesn't hold any grudges....

Well he's not Seth McFarlane, but then again, has Seth ever gotten a 5000 flag salute?

He seems to be set on making a name for himself in INDY now.  I think he will - I'm looking forward to next season - will be my first watching from beginning to end.  I saw a number of partial races this season - it was pretty cool.

Montoya loves Frank and has no problems with Williams, I only heard him mention Ron once earlier when he called him Roger :D

Nice photo.

It is said that Montoya was the only one of the Williams drivers who, in one occasion, grabbed the wheelchair of Sir Williams and, as there was something to celebrate, he pushed it wildly and they both had fun. Somewhat cool situation, if true.

I think the moment that JPM lost interest in F1 was at Canada, he pitted under a safety car and the FIA turned on the red light at the pit exit, JPM blew through it and rejoined the race. He was penalized. The following year, when JPM was gone the FIA changed the rules on the pit exit red light, treating it exactly like JPM treated it. The truth was JPM was in a close fight with a red car that was just behind him even as he exited the pit lane under red. Once again the FIA showed that its in the business of deciding who wins and who loses. JPM was never the same.

Yep, but how dare we defy our FIA masters? They could never do any wrong...

Maybe Penske are going to run Mclaren's Le Mans GTE effort? Or Mclaren are selling something high-tech to their NASCAR team? Or maybe Montoya's talking to some Honda people about being the factory's preferred Indycar driver? I know he's a Penske driver but Chip must feel stupid about passing on Montoya now.

He paid a visit to the McLaren motor home, he isn't their guest this weekend.

As I posted earlier, that Canada story is simply factually wrong.

I think he lost his passion for F1 already earlier that year. In most races in 2006 he was not nearly as good as Kimi and not nearly as good as you might expect of him  - like at the Nurburgring where he was more than a minute behind Kimi when he retired or in Spain where he just spun off the track all by himself.

Because of Monty, I started watching Indy car more frequently. I always thought he was one of the more interesting drivers on the grid. He's somehow like Alonso, but in a more funny and not so serious way. I would spend an hour with him rather than with any other driver on the grid these days.

Too bad McLaren didn't work out for him. He had couple more years in him..

"Federico Montoya, brother of WilliamsF1 star Juan Pablo, finished ninth in the first round of the BMW ADAC Championship, held at Hockenheim today.
The race was won by 16 year-old Sebastian Vettel who held off his teammate Dominik Jackson and Kiwi, Chris Van der Drift."

2004.

Chris Van der Drift!
That's the best racing name since Scott Speed.

Not disrespecting their achievements, just think they would have appreciated a slightly more dangerous era!

Or perhaps they can be give an air of bravado whilst knowing push will never come to shove and place them in such dangerous times.

Two drivers died and many were injured during Montoya's CART secondment. So that's a totally baseless comment.

What are you talking about? There are enough drivers in the past who were actually known as charesmatic characters when they were active. Prost, Senna, Lauda, Schumacher, Berger, Villeneuve, ...
Today there is only Raikonnen who is in a similar league like Montoya back then.

I don't know how long you've been following F1 forums on the internet, but lots of people said that Schumacher was boring as well as the rest of the drivers around then. This is nothing to do with my opinion on how boring the drivers actually are, but exactly the same things were said 10 years ago. And Raikkonen is considered pretty boring by a lot of people anyway.

Also, Prost, Senna, Mansell etc. were often considered boring compared to the "showmen" of the past like Hunt and Graham Hill.

Would his fat ass even fit in a car of today? He's been out of it for far too long to think of returning now. Teams know this and nobody would be interested. He says he's happy and enjoying life so it would be best for him to stay with what he's doing now.

Yup, I would have to agree with that. Shame he didn't quite manage to do the job in 2003.

So? MSC had as well. He coloured it so no one noticed. Still: Montoya is too many years out of F1 now as a driver. It was a joy to see him qualifying and racing and especially overtaking in F1.

If three-car teams happened, I'd love him in third Williams.

Ain't gonna happen, though.

But the upside is him being good for IndyCar!

And Michael's second career went SOOOO well.. :well:

Nothing against the grey haired citizens out there, it's just that it never seems to be a good sign or trend in terms of sports.  Especially the elite competition like Olympics, NBA, FIFA or F1 etc.

I enjoyed that interview with JPM and how he mocked how seriously F1 takes itself and how such small things can be turned into massive things.  I enjoyed his perspective overall and agreed a lot with what he said.  It's funny to look back after only a race or two and most of it is now forgotten.  Everything is pretty much back to normal in the F1 world but at the time you would have thought the world is ending.  I liked how JPM made fun of that, and also enjoyed his comments about Vettel and how cars/regulations can suit a driver or if they feel comfortable or not.

I remember in 2006 being disappointed with how he drove in his final year and how his F1 career ended with that final Indy race.  But I also enjoy his character overall and find him very entertaining.  I watched many NASCAR races that I otherwise wouldn't have to see how he would do and how he would fair against the fulltime NASCAR drivers.  And a similar thing with Indycar these days.  JPM and Indycar are a great match as they are both very unpredictable and very entertaining.

I think you missed my point Ross.

Both sensational in CART, both got spat out by F1.

To be to fair to Alex, he got royally screwed by the team at the time.
