Ah Australia. The home of this

This

What's that skip? There's a rally on? Bonza!

Where is it being held?
In Australia duh... But more specifically near Sydney (edit New South Wales in Coffs Harbour forgot to add this bit sorry everyone  )

What happened last time out?
Ah rally Germany, the rally no one seemed to want to win. What looked like another win for Ogier changed when he crashed not once but twice. This the left the door wide open for Latvala to romp to victory and close in on Ogier in the championship, but alas somehow latvala managed to miss the door and hit the doorframe when he crashed out on Sunday morning. This left Kris Meeke in the lead who the promptly crashed the very next stage. So this left Thierry Neuville to embrace his inner solberg (he crashed in shakedown) and take his and hyundai's first rally win. Followed home by his teammate sordo and the sole remaining vw Mikkelsen.

The contenders
You can't look much further than this guy
sebastian-ogier-wrc-profile.jpg
With Latvala's confidence more than likely having taken a battering last time out its more than likely that Ogier will repeat last year and win again, but don't count out Mikkelsen or kris Meeke, both were fast last year and if they can keep it on the road they might get a good result. Hirvonen looks like he has lost interest and is just searching for his pipe and slippers.
Kubica will probably end up like this at some point. :(
1090709-17337918-640-360.jpg
But maybe he won't we can but hope.
Also there will be the return of local boy Chris Atkinsosn in the second Hyundai.

Do say: This is Ogier's rally to lose
Don't say Hirvonen will be fighting for the win

When is it happening?
Starting from tomorrow through till Sunday. Although this will all be in the early hours of the morning if your in Europe.
Thinking about it maybe this wasn't the best rally to do an OP on........

But that's on at a terrible hour, I need my weekend motorsport fix!
Fear not my fellow motorsport fan, there are many other things on at the weekend to keep you entertained.
There is moto gp from misano which can be discussed here: http://forums.autosp...57#entry6876389
The beginning of formula E: http://forums.autosp...-prix-in-china/ (Now the official Beijing thread!)
Goodwood revival: http://forums.autosp...4/#entry6483451
Or failing that there is a madman in a box

Bonza!

That's the best (and only) promotion of the WRC that I've seen in a long time..!

Great OP, but yeh, where in Oz (I'm far too busy and important - not lazy, not at all, well maybe a bit lazy - to look it up)?

a thread dedicated for one rally - risky stuff! But great job, SS times are sooo brutal for europe :)

I have Ogier/Meeke/Neuville in my fantasyWRC team and they are the drivers I expect to do well there.

Cool.  Shame I'm not back in BrizVegas yet or it would be worth a road trip before Rally Eats Itself (i.e. next season, I'm out - it's no longer rallying).

Before realizing this thread is about the WRC, I already thought IndyCar has returned to Surfers Paradise and this is the official weekend thread.  :p

I hope Meeke can get another podium, he's been impressive in Finland and Germany. The scheduled times of the daily highlights on WRC+ are quite OK, might try to just watch that for once without knowing already what happened. :)

Congratulations on being the first to get that old chestnut in, before any of the drivers have managed to trot it out!

Nice OP.

What's the weather look like for the weekend?

I think it's likely to be sunny most of the weekend, but I can't be certain.
Close at the top after day 1: http://www.autosport...t.php/id/115823
But seb has snatched the lead, I expect he will run away from here.

VW whitewash so far, with only Meeke keeping them honest.

Why is Kubica 5 minutes down and a minute behind Evans - a cynic might think he had been off the road....

At least it's still relatively close at the front. Don't know what's happened to kubica. At least he is still running.

This happened to Kubica:

Apparently some yellow flag waring system (light) distracted him, but I just red that on other forum.

There's nobody waving a flag in that clip, but maybe they saw him coming and got the flag out ready for the inevitable crash.

There's no flag at all. It's the in car system that shows some warning lights. This is some new system that is being tested right now and from what Roberts says he was unaware of it.

Plumbing new depths in poor excuses?

So far he didn't use excuses, he always admitted to an error, I doubt it changed.

That bogus penalty cost Meeke another 3rd place finish, although he still kept 4th ahead of the increasingly slow Hirvonen,

I don't live under a rock but I do live in Australia and I didn't even know this was on until I came across it on TV. Wish it was back in WA/Perth though!
