After 14 races and many ups and downs for both drivers, there are amazingly only 3 points seperating the two Mercedes drivers. It has essentially reset the championship for a five race battle for the WDC. Who do you think will win and why?

I'd go with Hamilton as i'm a fan off the little bugger, so voted for him ... Meaning it will be Nico, hand Nico the WDC already.

I think Nico will win it.  There will be more reliability problems etc in the future.

Just can't tell with Mercedes reliability tbh, but will we finally see a rejuvenated Nico Rosberg? One who knows 2nd places just aren't good enough anymore, I hope we do and I hope we will all remember the last 5 races of this season for a long time. Still hoping for Nico!

Could be either, but I've plumped for Rosberg on the basis that, with 14 races gone and, by my reckoning, four mechanical DNFs so far, we can probably expect a couple more and I've a feeling Hamilton's going to be running slightly higher mileage PU components towards the end.

I also think there's less pressure on Rosberg now that he is behind, and in the time these two drivers have been together at Mercedes so far, Rosberg has never yet allowed Hamilton to go on an extended run of dominance. I think we're due for at least some races where Rosberg shows winning pace.

Any reason why you think Hamilton will have these failures or are you just going by his past that's full of bad luck?

I don't trust Mercedes reliability enough to judge it.

It's a 6 race championship, last two will have exact same outcome 1 through 10. And I think Lewis will win.

P.S. You should have added Ricciardo, he can still take it all with Moon and Stars aligning.

Good point. Leaving that aside for the moment, I'll repeat what I've said throughout the season: I think Hamilton has an edge on Rosberg and will probably walk away with the title.

But whatever the case, the stage is definitely set for a fantastic Abu Dhabi Double Points Decider. Though I don't care about either Hamilton or Rosberg, I do hope that'll be the deciding factor. It'd be hilarious. :p

Yep it all depends on reliability.  Based on their record so far this season you'd have to expect at least one (if not more) more reliability problem before the season is over.

Hamilton has been the better driver this year IMO, but not by a large margin.  So purely based on driving I'd give Hamilton the edge right now.  I'm just not sure it's their driving that will decide the championship.

Reliability will be fine. Lewis will win Suzuka, Austin and a wet Brazil before coasting to 2nd in Abu Dhabi.

Honestly can't judge it yet, the car has a big question mark hanging over it when it comes to reliability, so anything can happen. One thing is for sure if either one wins due to double points that will be a hollow wdc in my eyes.

You would have to predict Hamilton, he is the form guy, but things rarely happen as I expect.

If I were either of the drivers I'd be asking Mercedes to let me on the simulator on my days off to try and master the Yas Marinas circuit, I'd be spending all day on it. 😄

Lewis Hamilton:

  • LH has won every race hes finished when starting on the front row.
  • LH has finished on the podium every race he's completed even from the back of the grid twice.
  • LH has the backing of the team/fans since the Spa incident.
  • LH is TDG.
  • LH is in a Mercedes-Benz.

Hamilton's got it mastered, not so sure about Rosberg.

Well last year he was pretty much destroyed by Nico in the race, I know there was a supposed crack in the chassis but Nico was mighty close throughout qualifying before Hamilton lost it.

I think Lewis will win it, he's in the 'zone' and has momentum behind him, also his luck has changed and that has and will be a help I think.

I also agree with the person that said if either driver wins the WDC due to double points then it will be a rather hollow victory.

More or less for the same reason Alonso isn't.

The difference between Ricciardo and Alonso is almost as big as between the Merc drivers and Ricciardo   ;)

Lewis is the form driver at the mo....... Hence, his car will explode and Nico will be having a party in his pants.

Alonso and Vettel could mathematically still win the championship. Ricciardo's situation is a lot better than either of them, and is not really comparable. After Germany, he was 84 points adrift of the WDC lead. After Hungary it was 71. After Belgium, it went down to 66, then back out to 72 after Italy. Now, after Singapore, it is 60 points. He only needs to get it under 50 by Abu Dhabi to have an outside shot at this.

Up until Singapore I would have said Nico but now I'm not sure anymore.

Hamilton started building momentum and if we return to the last time he started a streak, he won 4 races in a row.

Nico has to up his game in race trim to challenge Lewis now. I guess a lot depends on reliability as well.

Lewis for me, he is in the same zone he was in during 2012, he is rampaging he way through the last part of the season just like 2012. Yes the last part of 2012 might not look like a romp but Lewis was leading several races when something broke, on top of the races he did win. I am judging the driver not the equipment. Austin should be particularly stunning.

The championship will be decided by performance of equipment whether we like it or not, you mayswell turn off now if you can only cope with pure driver performance deciding the championship.

Fun fact: Nico has never won a GP after the summer break. OK, the pre-2014 sample is rather small ;). Still I have the feeling that his challenge will peter out somehow unless he succeeds in resetting his mind.

Apart from luck (and that will remain a factor!) mental freshness and mental stability will be pretty important. For the moment it seems the pendulum has swung in Lewis' favour also in that respect ("Damnit!"). And Lewis is more of a winner than Nico - and that comes into play when we're playing the Abu Dhabi double points roulette - unless of course Lady Luck intervenes in a veiled dress.

Well if you take the first 5 races for example, Lewis 'won' despite a DNF. So I'm going to have to go with him.

I don't care who wins.  If Nico wins, he will make a class act WDC and frankly, F1 could use another such gentlemen's champion to give the sport a bit of uplifting.  Also the sport needs more champions in general as three of the current ones will be retiring within the next 5 years or so and it isn't a given that Hamilton and Vettel will stick around in the sport as long as the current set

That said, Lewis should have another WDC as he is a super talent and that should be reflected in hardware for the sake of history.   He is already a champion, so an above like analysis would not apply, but he is also contributive to the sport.

I have no problem with it being decided in Abu Dhabi - if the drivers were that against it, they should have fought Bernie.  Now they have to take what they signed up for.

For me, may the best man win.

Abu Dhabi will be THE race.
Can't see one of them building a gap of 50+ points in the upcoming races. Everything will be down to one race performance.
The tension will be huge, i think my nerves won't handle the final showdown.

I think it is totally in the hands of reliability which kinda sucks.  If both cars are perfect between now and the end of Abu Dhabi then it's Hamilton - life, however, especially F1 life, is never that straightforward.

In my mind the chance are 65/35 in favor of Lewis

On track Lewis holds an edge over Nico at the moment. In qualifying the two are even, but Lewis seems to hold an edge come race day.

In straight fights, I think Lewis will win most of the time. Reliability and luck throws a pair of spanners into the works, and could swing momentum either way, both are indiscriminate variables.

So if it comes down to driver performance, I would pick Lewis on current form

If it comes down to luck or reliability, it could go either way

I really hope double points does not cheapen this Championship.

Mostly its going to be just luck.

Whoever's car does / does not break down, and whoever happens to win the double points race.
