Doubt they'll cancel the Grand Prix because of that typhoon. At worst, they'll just race behind the safety car untill there's enough laps to give half points.
LOL, great thinking. What about the fans at the circuit, man? Let them drown?

They'll be lucky to get out even late on Sunday evening and could be stranded in Japan until late on Tues, even early Weds. Which would ruin Russia.
Which would at least solve THAT problem!

Well now if they get stuck in Japan and can't make Russia..... that's karma for you

May I remind you of the 2005 American Grand Prix?
Evidence, if it was needed, that most the time F1 doesn't give a rat's arse about the punters.

This whole anti-russian mainstream trend is getting tiresome. Its not good for F1 to be used as a shield of ugly politicians around the world to further their agendas. F1 is international, deal with it!

The country that gave us Mikhail Aleshin should definitely have a Grand Prix. However Sochi is the wrong place at the wrong time.

#F1 FIA says there will be no decision today if race will be moved forward. Saturday race is off the table. Start likely stays Sun 3 p.m. Ubimet weather guy says chances for dry race nearly zero. There will be rain at racetime, before & after. Worst conditions expected at night
The FIA has confirmed to teams that there is no possibility of the Japanese GP running on Saturday, but Sunday start could be earlier. As noted earlier Suzuka promoter Honda does not want a Saturday race, which could lead to refunds for Sunday tickets. Consider this - we need only two slow laps behind the safety car on Sunday for the pole man to earn 12.5 points. The race is worth half points as long as two laps have been run, even behind the safety car, so that puts a huge premium on qualifying. Imagine if one @MercedesAMGF1 driver is on pole, and the other has a problem in qual. In effect grid order could determine points...and that could have a major impact on the HAM v ROS World Championship battle...

Looking at today, the Merc's are so comfortably ahead that their most sedate of banker laps will put them on the front row of the grid. If it's a wet qualy though, who knows what can happen!

Tell me about it (Although I have this problem with RTL – oh no worries, I watch on mute). Being on a digital subscription, I can’t record ‘hours’, I can only record ‘programs’ (with a max of 15 minutes in advance and 45 minutes afterwards) from a TV-schedule, which is never updated anyway and certainly not on such short notice. So I’ll just end up programming 24hrs worth of subsequent RTL programs. Hopefully there’s no soft-core movie on at Saturday night or I’ll have some explaining to do.That's the thing, going to be a pain in the backside to try and record it with Sky.
I don’t think the people at home enjoyed that GP either.May I remind you of the 2005 American Grand Prix?

Looking at this, the cyclone seems to have slowed down. Looking at being someway South west on Sunday. Moving the GP forwards by just a couple of hours might make all the difference as it looks like hitting land Sunday night/Monday morning now. Doesn't bode well for escape to Sochi of course!
Although weather underground is still pretty pessimistic about the whole day, predicting 3 and a half inches of rain.

That was still one of the most surreal moments of my life. At least it was in the afternoon though... if I get up at 5am on Sunday only to see Charlie's Safety Car Fest 2014 I will not be amused, especially if the weather for the previous five hours was raceable.

dont know which thread to use, but Suzuka Circuit official statement
As of now, the race will go ahead as scheduled, but depending on typhoon situation, there might be alterations to the schedule of the race day.
We will make and notice the final decision at JPT1200 on Sat.

As I said on another thread. Very disappointed they ruled out a Saturday race.

Japan Met forecast for Suzuka Circuit
atm no worry for Typhoon itself for whole Sunday.
Main concern is rain. It says it starts to get heavier after 1500JPT, altho heaviest rain is expected for after 1800.
From my experience, sometimes it's very quiet and not much rain until typhoon really gets close despite forecast says contrary.
Sometimes it rains but very patchy, and gets continuously heavy when it gets close.
Sometimes it continues to rain for long time.
It really varies depending on typhoon and location. It's very unpredictable how the weather actually will be when typhoon is involved. When Qualifying was washed away in 2010 Suzuka, that rain was brought by low pressure system and accompanying front that came from Asia continent, which is MUCH more predictable.
This time, it's not as predictable.
Actually, it looks like the probability of torrential rain isnt much different from that of Fuji many years back and Sepang 2009, or this years WEC race at Silverstone, imo.
It's difficult decision to make. Quite a few people come just for Sunday by making a day trip from distance.
However I wouldnt be surprised if they decide to start the race at 1300, which to me seems to be the most sensible, and best compromise between being on the safe side and taking a chance, if they are to make alteration.

weather weather altogether what's it going to do?
We need to get Michael Fish out of retirement to say nothing to worry about, it's not a hurricane, just a small zephyr with 5.8 drops of rain.
I'm getting the feeling Charlie Whiting will even be putting the safety car out in front of the open topped lorry for the drivers waving lap at this rate come Sunday.....

Bit of a random question, especially as it's my first post in the forum, but does anyone have any idea (assuming they go ahead as normal) what time qualy and the race would be up on the BBC iPlayer? Normally I would just watch the race live, but it really wouldn't be smart of me to not take advantage of a potential lie-in given my early Monday starts haha.

Fair enough, was hoping to watch the full coverage but I guess I'll find out if I can tomorrow. Not sure about iplayer, but BBC1 have the full qualifying rerun at 13.00 on Sat and the race at 13.15 on Sun if that's more suitable

Latest detailed forecast
http://www.tenki.jp/...5/27/30123.html
Rain peak is at 3 hour bracket before the noon. Rather strong rain throuout pm , but not heavy.
Rain is expected to get weaker towards late daytime and evening.
Wind is no threat, wind will be weaker than today.
A responsible from Ubimet in an interview with sky germany after Quali said about the same. There will be rain but not so much rain that they can't drive, maybe even only light rain in the afternoon. Wind is no theme.

Yes, and that's why we shouldn't be having a race in Russia as it currently is.
Thinking that a deeply brutal and corrupt government is deeply brutal and corrupt doesn't make you a stooge of the 'mainstream media' or any sort of xenophobe.

if that government is so 'brutal and corrupt' (the latter I am likely not to contest), why are so many Russians behind their president? (more than ever before). I genuinely look forward to the Russian GP

For the same reason that North Koreans are behind theirs? Not much of a choice
But seriuosly, fingers crossed for no pace car fiasco tommorow and for logistics in good shape to transfer circus to Russia. I might not like Tsar Vladimir's politics, but I look forward to watch race on brand new track. And I guess a lot of people in Russia made plans, booked tickets, booked travel, so no fun seeing them screwed because cargo cannot leave Japan for few days.

So many factors point to a sensible solution of bringing forward the race time, but nothing happens. Typical F1. I'm still going to get up obviously, but if its just to see a few laps behind the Safety Car I will not be amused at all.

The typhoon seems to be stalled now, so it will be to the SW come the race, so it is looking better, perhaps the outer rain bands will be present though.
If it was 1976 they'd be running, who knows in 2014 though. If they are not aquaplaning there should not be a SC IMO.

You can make the same argument about a certain country with a certain regime that attacked Russia. You can also can make the same argument about the regime that was in Russia at that time. All brutal, all corrupt and all with most of their people behind.

And now this is a thread for international politics, not the prep for a race in Japan ? Anyway, they absolutely should have held the Russian race in Moscow, not Sochi. The sight of F1 cars racing past St Basil's cathedral would be just fine, but it would invoke the irony of them also racing past the tomb of Lenin.
