In the 1939 Lands End Trial J.H.Appleton drove Number 435 , a Singer , gaining a bronze award . Previously in 1938 he entered a trial run by the West Middlesex Amateur M.C.C. and won the 100 Cup . He also won the team award with two other Singer entrants . He must have taken part in many other events at that time but I do not have any details . I hope that someone has entry lists , results lists or better still reports and photographs . I would be grateful to hear of any information about Mr.Appletons pre war activities . I know he was successfull post war in other cars but  I am interested in his time with his Singer .

To pre-empt any muddying of the waters, this is not the same Appleton who built the Maserati-based Applleton Special,.  That was R.J.W. Appleton, according to Denis Jenkinson's Racing Car Pocketbook.

According to an article in The Automobile there were two other Appletons active pre war . They also say that BYY 428 was used by Bob Appleton  in 1934 but it was not built until December 1935 . Were the three Appletons related  ? Any information would be welcomed .

Despite his pretty distinctive initials, even RJW Appleton is hard to trace. He doesn't seem to be on the 1911 England and Wales census and the only records on Ancestry are from phone books - he seems to have lived in and around Bromley from the late 1930s onwards. I can't find either birth or death records for him either. The other two - even harder!

I have found a reference in Motorsport November 1944 that suggests that J.H. was probably not related to John and Bob Appleton .
