Cosworth are already seeking an F1 return with an new low cost F1 V6 engine. I wonder if this means the have a customer? Caterham? Forza Rossa?

That report would be fine if all they needed was an ICE, but the PU is so much more than that. So are they going to develop that as well or would the teams have to bolt someone else's into place?

Don't think Cosworth have the facilities or expertise to develop their own ERS system.  Would think that the engine would have to be developed in conjunction with an ERS system.  Would be difficult mating someone else's ERS to their own ICE.

That's what I thought, which makes the idea of a low cost ICE on it's own sound unlikely.

Cosworth have had a engine ready via the test bench since last year they simply have no teams willing to take them up on it

No surprise there. The teams need an integrated PU, not a standalone ICE.

Mercedes's PU is successful because the ICU and ERS are deeply integrated and made for one another, so the extent that you can unlikely just bolt the ERS on to anther ICE, the same way you bolting a Red Bull front wing on a Mclaren might not work in practice.

I hate to blow my own trumpet but I had mentioned this in the forum several months ago. The Cosworth engine project was cited in a paper in Race Engineering. Contrary to what has been quoted here Cosworth has done their own ERS research as well. Any prospective team would still have to source their transmission. What I find more interesting is that one Bernard Charles Ecclestone is involved in the project. A man who can raise $100 millions in a week can surely find a few coins to throw down Northampton's way. An affordable engine program is a must if teams are expected to survive. If a team like Caterham can source a PU for €14 millions that's €10 million they don't need to find. Mind you making the sport more affordable is no guarantee of survival if an outfit is still plagued with poor management.

Something doesn't add up here though - or Bernie is juggling with several agendas at the same time and just waits to see which one makes a safe landing.

He's publicly in favour of an 8x3 championship which seriously raises the bar for the weaker teams - let alone giving much opportunity for new teams.

And now he's rumoured to be involved with Cosworth alllegedly giving a lifeline to the weaker side of the grid or maybe attracting new teams.

So what's real in this story specifically concerning BE's role?

How exactly are engine manifucturers held to a ransom (if that's really the case) by Caterham staying on the grid?
And how does this match Bernie's earlier and repeated opinion that he would rather see teams like Caterham just go?

Misdirection is Ecclestone's métier. He says one thing and does another. Having an independent manufacturer means there's an option for teams who can't afford a fully fledged manufacturer unit. Whether Team Principles would have the sense to opt for it is another matter. Tony Fernandes was running a team with 350 people and paying €24 million for a PU and the project failed.

Cosworth will only ever be in a team that is struggling for cash and thus allowing them to save a bit of cash, Unless it was a good engine from the word go then there might be some teams willing to take a chance on it.
