That's the main benefit, but water injection also cools the incoming charge, less important today with effective intercoolers.

The Tyrrells didn't use proper water injection, which I suspect was against the regulations.  They simply sprayed water into the inlets cooling things down (until the water was all used up).

Naaah. The water-injection was fake, if the Tyrrells would have used all the water they carried in 1984 the driver would have drowned in the cockpit. I remember reporters asking about Ken's injection-system and if they would be sceptical he would bark: 'I don't have to tell you my bloody secrets. Ask Ferrari how theirs work!'

 

The fact remains that the FIA in the end disqualified Tyrrel for four reasons: they claimed that their were traces of some kind of fuel in the water that was tanked, hence Tyrrel took on fuel during the race (not allowed back then), they did not use the prescribed gasoline (so illegal fuel), there were illegal fuelsystems in the car (watertank to engine) AND they used ballast to bring the car to weight (water with lead).

 

It has always been my guess that IF the FIA had tried to disqualify Tyrrel on the last count, they would have found it very difficult to make it stick. And that showed in the appeal, because the FIA had to withdraw three of these charges, hence they came with new ones, hence Tyrrell stayed DQ'ed.

 

But now we have strayed way, away from the original topic. I will repeat my standpoint: the win of Alboreto in Las Vegas 1982 was legit...

I wrote a dossier earlier this year on one of the Tyrrell 011s and I've just been re-reading it.  Although the Tyrrells may well have been underweight in 1984, I can't see how they can have been underweight in 1982.  After the nonsense in Brazil, cars were weighed after the race before the fluids were replenished and allowances were made for obvious leaks if necessary.  The Tyrrells were not much lighter than the turbo cars. 

 

At Las Vegas Alboreto qualified very well but that was largely because he delayed his last qualifying run to the last moment and the track had got a lot quicker as it cooled.  True what was said earlier that the track didn't suit the turbos but the Renaults were still 1-2 on the grid and were running 1-2 in the race.  Rosberg just needed to finish so he wasn't out to win.  Arnoux's Renault retired and both Prost's Renault and Watson's McLaren were troubled by vibration.  Alboreto won by 27 seconds IIRC despite being told to reduce his revs.  I don't think there was anything dodgy about that win. 

 

BTW, the DFY came just before the Detroit win in June 1983, not just before Las Vegas.
