Ford and Foyt built a number of these from 1965 through the 1970s with considerable success before they were superseded by the Cosworth V8.

I recently acquired an overhaul manual for this engine and I'm curious as to how many units were built.

Anybody know?

Jerry Entin's friend, Bill Wiswedil, might know...

He recently acquired one and has been looking for one for a long time.

A mundane question...but I've always wondered what sort of exhaust note these engines had? Gruff American V8, or something a bit more melodious..?

My friend Walter Goodwin at Racecar Restorations in Indianapolis rebuilt the engine in the Jim Clark Lotus 38 in concert with the Classic Team Lotus restoration. You can hear the car run around the 4:00 minute mark of the following short video:

True, though that site fails to note that William Wonder put one into his GT40, #103, the oldest surviving example. I don't think he ever raced it with that engine, though. Today the car, still fitted with the engine, is displayed at the Shelby American Collection here in Boulder, Colorado. The book Shelby Cars in Detail, published by David Bull, has a chapter on this car.

Belated thanks for this interesting link, which answered my question.
