Just been down the pub for a quiet drink or 6 and got to pondering about GH in Mill Hill.

Apparently he had legendary parties after the British Grand Prix. At the time, I sort of assumed these were on the evening of the GP, but I guess in retrospect that was far too soon. How could the drivers and everyone else turn up in the immaculate ties and suits of the day, full of life, ready to go with so little time to prepare? And it would take a bit time to get there from Silverstone or Brands. In these days the Grand Prix was on a Saturday. Did the offending parties take place the next day on the Sunday?

Who was on the guest list? I guess all GP drivers were automatically invited. Was there ever an appearance by DSJ? - Can't imagine him as a party animal. Was Rindt ever there to kick him in the bollocks?

I am curious to know GH's address in Mill Hill. Surely it deserves a blue plaque. Does anyone know where he actually lived? I don't suppose anyone cares too much about giving the address these days as all trace of him will likely be all gone.

His home parties must have been a real blast...

I turned up unexpectedly at his post-Australian Grand Prix party in 1966 and it got quite raucous.

Then again, might it have been harder to get away with that on home turf? Methinks not, Graham just went ahead and enjoyed himself enormously.

Let's hope the actual plaque shows the correct year of death.

Didn't know he won the 1968 title with BRM either.

Partying and socialising amongst the Grand Prix fraternity in Graham's era was fairly common place. There was a much more "clubbable" ethos, and, of course, a lot of GP drivers in the early-mid 60s were British or from "down-under". If you look at old Autosport issues from that era the news section regularly gives mention of formal club dinners (usually accompanied by a photo with familiar faces), or private parties and barbecues thrown by drivers of the time.

Also, there used to be the post British Grand Prix cricket match - can you imagine that happening today?

I do remember reading of an incident where Graham ended up in A&E following an incident involving bare foot dancing and broken glass.

Pity that English Heritage got the year of Graham's fatal accident wrong thus:

Blue Plaques to Racing Drivers

One of the most famous racing drivers of the 1960s and '70s was Graham Hill (1929 -1977); he is commemorated at 32 Parkside, Mill Hill, his home from 1960 until 1972, five years before his untimely death in a flying accident.

They did make amends by reminding us that he took the 1968 World Championship in a BRM, though. Not too many people are aware of that...
