So my thread on prototypes got a lot of great responses, and now I'm thinking it's worth starting a separate thread on production-based GT racing cars over the last 20 years,  because there have been some epic and lovely vehicles in that broad category. I don't consider some things that have raced as "GT" cars to truly be GT cars, so I guess you can use your discretion in defining the term. For me, cars like the 911 GT1-98, Dauer 962LM, Toyota GT ONE, and Nissan R390 are really just prototypes that had token gestures to meeting the homologation rules. My list is what I would consider true GT cars in that they were based on cars designed for road use first.

5. Ferrari F50 GT1. Never raced because the GT1 world moved too quickly for Ferrari and they were afraid to be beaten by Porsche/Mercedes, but what a stunning car. I believe there is only a single car in the US, and I've been lucky enough to see it run on 2 occasions. Unforgettable sound.

4. Saleen S7R. Took the fight to the big manufacturers at the end of the era for its class, and won. There are a ton of great liveries on this car, this one from Oreca is my favorite.

3. Viper GTS-R 2014. I always loved the Viper. Now that the factory team is running the throwback colors that are reminiscent of the GT1 car from 2000, I think it's the best looking car on the current GT-LM grid. The sharper angles on this version compared to the GT2 car from the late 90s make it look more aggressive.

My prototype list had the Aston AMR1 and BMW LMR as 1-2. That doesn't change with GT cars (except just a BMW engine this time).

2. Aston Martin DBR9. The Gulf livery of the later cars is great, but I like it most in the traditional BRG.

1. Mclaren F1 GTR Longtail. Seeing this car in magazines back in '97 made me start following Le Mans racing. Nothing else to say, just look at it.

I love the long tail McLaren, mostly in the Gulf Team Davidoff colours.

I don't know why but I've always had a soft spot for the Lister Storm GT. Otherwise, the previously mentioned F1 GTRs, DBR9s, Vipers and Salens.

This one is gorgeous, even better than the Ferrari 458 equivalent.

Best one in my opinion.

Surprised no-one has mentioned the Maserati MC12 yet. Pity it never got to race at Le Mans.

I can't believe I forgot the 550... The Prodrive version of that car was one of my all time favorites.

And the beautiful rival C5R Corvette.

Loved them both, watched them battle at Road America, great days in GT racing.

The 458 looks better and that video is great because Monza is probably the greatest venue to enjoy pure sounds with all the echoing, but IMO the 430 had a nicer engine note, mostly because of the exhaust backfiring under braking. Check this out-

As far as Super GT cars go, the HSV is my favorite, although it has no road going cousin.

Because it's an ugly abomination.
