Oddly enough, up until this year i was always a ferocious campaigner for big, loud engines and the whole argument that the ear splitting noise was a vital part of the show. I loved it and maintained it was vital or F1 loses it's sense of bravado and extreme engineering.

Cue the races this year where cars can pass each other and the racing has been brilliant for the most part and i have kind of accepted the new noise for what it is.

My boy just turned 3 last week, he has a slight interest in F1 because i do of course and right now i am his hero until he figures out i'm as much a dumbass as the next person. He has shown a passing interest but i can't get him to sit down for more than 10 minutes. The other night we were playing wrestles and he said he wanted to watch dump trucks on youtube, i noticed a "suggested item" of a 2004 Ferrari galloping through Monza on it's own. I pressed play and he went nuts, instantly. He was transfixed, now THIS had his attention, he sat there until i said it was bed time.

My point? I dunno, maybe the noise does matter to the non hard core fan?

I don't see the twist in this story compared to all the other things being said about the new noise.

But I hope you realize that you've spoiled your son for the future regarding the new sound and if things go really wrong, he'll end up making threads in this very forum complaining about how bad the sound is compared to earlier years. ;)
