So Jules Bianchi apparently hit the truck taking care of Sutil's car on the track.

Image of the crashed car:  https://d3j5vwomefv4....jpg?1412496131

I'm angry as I don't understand how a safety car can stay on track for many laps on a dry track, but not go out instantly when a truck goes on track.  Charlie has some serious questions to answer after today...

But mostly I hope Jules is ok.  :(

Was the incident captured at all? There seems to be no sign of any footage. Here's hoping Jules Bianchi is ok.

My understanding is there is some footage, but networks decided not to show it?  I may be wrong...

Latest news:

FIA press officer Matteo Bonciani has given a short statement about Bianchi's condition:

"Driver is not conscious, he has been sent to the hospital by ambulance because the helicopter cannot go in these conditions. Further updates will follow - for the moment we cannot say anything. We will keep you updated as fast as we can."

Unacceptible... they really have to better the safety measures when on track interventions are performed. Hope he's okay.  :(

First of all, I hope that Jules can make it out of this OK! This was a freak accident but this was caused by a series of cockups by the FIA. This will be a discussion for another time, but the FIA has some serious decisions to make.

C'mon Jules, you can pull this through!

At the start of the race Charlie was too cautious, keeping the SC out way too long. Yet at the end he was being too risky. I guess he was trying to get to the end of the race without sending the SC out. Wasn't a good idea.

Hope Bianchi is ok.

Why was the safety car not out? In wet conditions with other vehicles out on the track, why keep the race going?

Why didn't they race earlier?

Why did they race when they didn't have a medical helicopter available? FP1 was delayed at Austin last year because there wasn't a helicopter available..why didn't the same happen here?

You're probably right.

On French TV they just said that the car has been brought to the pits, they weren't allowed to film it but Montagny went close to see it and said it was not very damaged, except a big impact near the cockpit/head...

Looks to me that the marshalls in the picture above are cleaning up. That airbox is not in it's normal position, looks like it was seperated from the car...

Edit: Not too sure when looking again, looks like the airbox was damaged half way.

Have a real bad feeling about this and I hope Jules will be fine. The lack of footage and downness of everyone at the circuit makes it much more worrying.

Really hope Jules is okay. These cars aren't as strong for a sideway crash as a head on crash, especially against such a heavy object.

From Tobias: Sutil: "Situation with Bianchi is critical. Hope he is in good hands. I was standing right next it. Don't want to talk about details."

Ambulance was faster, there's a pic on twitter of the medical helicopter taking off probably taking the f1 trauma docter to the hospital.

This is horrible, the whole roll hoop is gone. I don't think any form of cockpit protection could have stopped this kind of accident.

I agree with Davidson - no collectors should be on the track during a safety period.

People bitch when a show car goes out for a run of the mill shunt, and bitch when it doesn't.. In a way the FIA is in a no win situation.

Drivers need to respect waved yellows properly, if they did then localalised danger spots would barely be an issue (I'm not saying that's what happened here, as there could have been mech failure, another driver involved, or some other cause).

What I found strange (once I knew something had happened - Thank you BBC for absolutely no clue whatsoever) was how long it took to get the show car and then red flag out. Having run far more laps than necessary under yellows at the start, in the name of safety, to keep running laps when something like this had happened seems rather daft, bordering on inexplicable.

We got half a race all told, and it would appear a driver was seriously injured. Not one of Charlie's more successful workdays.

Reminds me of Hockenheim when the SC was called out because they didn't think two crashes can happen twice at an awkward place.

I hope it's just a big scare... Fingers crossed.

Theres about 15cm in front of the lower cameras, that's completely missing.

There is another image showing a close up of the front of the car. The left front mirror is torn off and it appears as if there is scraping marks on top of the of the front, suggesting he might have slid under the recovery vehicle. It seems really, really bad :(

It seems there was a choice not to use the helicopter and to transport Jules by road. The Helicopter was available.

Sky seem to be dancing around the fact that a car can go under the rear of one of those diggers. If thats what's happened then we can only pray for a positive outcome

The weather conditions were fine right? Its just the safety truck that came out without calling an SC before?

If we were to deploy the safetycar everytime a car went off the track, we would be at Nascar standards.

Before the race people were complaining the FIA were too cautious and now it's the other way around? Beyond stupid.

somebody is going to die if thy don't stop this race. visibility is bad

I posted this in the race thread when the race started after the first safety car. I just had a terrible feeling about this race when I saw the conditions they were racing in.

I pray that Jules is going to be ok

The FIA and Charlie are completely to blame for this

Forget about talking that the FIA offered the organizers an earlier race start. The situation was that the visibility was horrible - this was easily forseeable

Please, please let Jules be ok

Hate to say it but the commentators currently on BBC are all watery eyed and choked up. They just bumped a Sutil interview too.

I think race control felt pressured into leaving it under local yellows after they bottled it at the start, they didn't want any more safety car laps I guess. I really hope they don't knee-jerk and get even more sensitive in the future. When Sutil crashed there I think every regular viewer assumed it would be an immediate safety car given the likelihood of other cars having a similar off, I'm fairly sure that if the race had started under fewer SC laps they would have brought it out without hesitation.  Race control have some serious explaining to do.

Would it even have been particularly dangerous to leave the Sauber there? It was quite tucked away into the barrier. They would have done that in the old days and current cars are extremely safe in collisions with each other. What they're not designed to hit are diggers and cranes.

As I said in the race thread, Maria de Villota comes to mind. I don't have a good feeling about this.
