Horrible F1 driver, but very sad to hear he died in motorbike accident.
By far not the worst to have graced a race track, and a fairly awful comment to put in a thread like this frankly.
I have fond memories of Andrea De Cesaris in his Alpha... he was a front runner at times.
RIP mate. too young.

What a day.
Rest in peace, Andrea.

This day just doesn't want to end does it...

Awwwww this is really bad news! One of my favourite drivers ever!! RIP Andrea

Very sad news. I was also too young to watch him race live, but he was definitely one of my favourite characters of the sport's history, in addition to being blindingly fast on his day.

Thank you for share. I saw him in that race in Long Beach 82... his first and only pole. Lauda was the winner. My toghts for his Family, Friends and all the Fans.

I don't think that's a particularly fair assessment - he was certainly erratic but he calmed down toward the end of his career. In fact, had the Jordan not broken down at Spa in '91 he could well have won it!
Rest in peace Andrea.
Indeed, he was incredibly fast and in the latter part of his carreer also reliable. His greatest race was probably in 1983, also at Spa where he was dominantly leading until his car broke down.

When it comes to tragedy in Motorsport it never rains, it pours.

This is dreadful! My prayers go out to his family and fans.
So sad.

RIP. Such a sad day

He did 15 F1 seasons. That's 7th most (a 6 way tie). A win for Alfa Romeo at Spa really would have been a special day. For F1 and, to his dying day, for Andrea.

Thoughts with his family, friends and fans.

RIP.
Wake up to look for any news on Bianchi, and then I see this.

RIP, de Cesaris.
Posted 05 October 2014 - 23:24
That sucks, I too saw him at LB many, many days, a track he was very popular at. The definition of a journeyman, who may not have been spectacular but always made a contribution, and made the teams he was with better.
RIP, Andrea, I rooted for you when I saw you race.
Hoping you got a brilliant ride when you got to the pearly gates...

R.I.P Andrea
Posted 06 October 2014 - 00:19
He was before my time, so I never got to see him race. But I'd definitely heard of him.
Very sad day. RIP.

First driver for Jordan back in the day, so as an Irishman he was always in the good books.
Rest easy sir.
Posted 06 October 2014 - 01:42
Oh hell. Like pathogen and WWmk2 ...I was at many a LBGP in the 70's&80's and always enjoyed his antics.
My best recollection was in Phoenix when he was the first out in the 7UP Jordan in Friday pre-qualifying at 7 bloody AM.
I looked at him and asked ...
"Sei sveglio?". He stuck his tongue out, smacked his helmet, like THIS IS YOUR WAKE UP CALL!!!!
God Speed Andrea.

Joe Saward may have his failings, but his take is much more human and informative than some of the reports coming out of the regular motorsport press:
http://joesaward.wor...aris-1959-2014/
He had a rather alarming twitch which many believed caused some of the many accidents that he used to have,
He later took part in Formula Masters races, but spent his life trading currency each winter and then windsurfing each summer.

What a marvellous year for F1 with Schmi, Jules and now this.
Don't forget the engine sound.

RIP Andrea. Very sad.

Oh what dreadful news. One of those weird and wonderful racers who made F1 in the 1980s so compelling. And in the 90s, a genuine wise head. There's hope for Pastor yet.
RIP signor De Cesaris
Absolutely agree with this description, he was a memorable character. What a dark day for F1.
RIP Andrea De Cesaris.

Terrible news, I'm extremely sad to hear this.
Always had a soft spot for him.
Vividly remember Spa 1983, when he launched from 3rd on the grid into the lead off the jump. Race was red flagged from false start but he did exactly the same thing on the restart to blast off into the lead. Unfortunately a dodgy pit-stop and later his engine blowing put the victory he so deserved out of question.
Ciao Andrea...

Very sad indeed, I always thought he was better than his reputation suggested. RIP

Thanks Autosport for posting that interview on the website. Andrea raised a very valid point in the interview that if you weren't driving a Brabham or a Williams, and more importantly a Mclaren it was very hard to win in that era. I have to agree on that one. I has also been really good to see the fact that Andrea was great at developing a car, which would have helped him be employed as much as the money he provided.
