It is relative to today and we all like to see a glimpse what is going on in the backround.

Battery under the nose, all kind of itterations of elephant wings.

Second article is about the 2.4 V8 engine and troubles they had with them.

Worth reading.

Really great thinking for the car, but it would have been insanely complex. I wonder would it have been reliable at all?

On the flip side, with them coming back to F1 now with McLaren, it bodes well that they were at least thinking about the recovery systems for KERS, granted the new PU is vastly different.

Its good overall that they are back in F1.

Its old news but maybe this was the basis to the rumours that they wanted to buy in to McLaren, also with the deal with Honda you have to wonder if a modified version of this with the new regs would be better if there new 2015 car still a dud next year

I am fascinated that Honda continued development after pulling out of F1, as the article says Honda must like the rest of us have a "What if" feeling, theirs being that much greater having invested +1 Usd Billion in the project, bringing Brawn in to win it all, and then see him do it immediately after the pull out with a Mercedes powered version of 'their' car.

Interesting article, but the more I look at that car, there are more doubts that that car in windtunnel is RA109.

To me that looks like a RA107 chassis used during 2007 preseason tests, a little bit modifed to conform with 2008 cockpit safety regulations and 2009 aero regulations, with 2009 front and rear wings sticked on.
I don't think that car was ever in consideration to hit the track. They were probably just playing with aerodynamics of front and rear wing, nothing more. Or did I miss something?

Honda did try and understand the exhaust blown diffuser effect with scale models etc. Quite a fair bit R and D went into it.

Very interesting articles, thanks for sharing

It does make me wonder if the whole "most expensive F1 car ever developed" wasn't quite true, as the car Brawn ran seemingly wasn't the same as the one Honda spent the lions share of their budget on.

The 09 Honda/Brawn project was awesome. 4 wind tunnels on the go. The DNA can be seen in the W05.

This has been touched and talked about several times on "Honda return" thread already.

The original article, at least some of them, are by some Japanese motorsports magazines. Iirc it was back in 2012 or so, so quite a while ago actually.

Honda R&D has budget and operation independent of Honda Motor Co, so seems Honda R&D do what they want to do and what they feel is beneficial. Don't know that's unique tho. Anyway they continued on some F1 development after F1 withdrawal. Might sound illogical and madness, but that's what they are.

Iirc, Toyota/TMG do some of the same things just to stay 'up to date'. Not with any intention to race but to stay close to the current technology.

Toyota couldn't keep up with the F1 technology when they were in F1...

Though they kinda had double diffuser back in the day and 2009 was actually their best year in F1. Who knows what could they built upon it if not for crisis.

If they couldnt keep up, why do Ferrari, McLaren, Caterham etc. use their windtunnel? A little research would help you understand. Honda and Toyota may have been missing the top step on the podium, but your statement is just false.
