Good morning all,

I'm trying to locate any personal info on HANS FREY who, surely, raced on a BMW 328 in 1949 at:

- Mille Miglia (race number 613)

- Circuit of Garda Lake

- Formula 2 GP at Monza

Thounsand thanks for any help

Hello tuscan4000

You are not the only one interested in Hans Frey, but I can't help you a lot. The only thing I know for sure is that he was Swiss. But in Switzerland there is no trace of him and nobody seems to know him, so I think he must have been living in Northern Italy.

Frey obviously was Swiss citizen and he had the Swiss flag painted on the car, but living in Italy. In Automobil Revue he is called "Italienschweizer". I don´t know whether he raced with Italian or Swiss licnse. I have only the three starts in Italy in my records, which you already mentioned:

24.4.1949 Mille Miglia #613 (co driver is named Cavenago), dnf

26.6.1949 Monza GP Formula 2 #32 (retired with engine failure)

10.7.1949 Garda Formula 2 #18 dnq? / dns?

In the Curami book "La sport e i suoi artignani" is a picture of the car at the Mille Miglia. It is said to be a BMW 328 chassis with a smoothly streamlined body with motorcycle fenders. According to Curami this was made by Volpini with Zagato body.

In the book 'Circuito del Garda' he is mentioned as FRAY(sic) the Swiss with a 'rare authentic' BMW (race #18)..No results or anything given...

Frey is a very common name in Switzerland.

In motor racing apart from Hans and Rahel I have Benedikt, Bruno (b. 1940), Georges, Jean-Pierre (b. 1955), Lorenz (b. 1990), Michel (b. 1973), and Walter (b. 1943) without any indication of relations between them.

Rewind, as a German I KNOW that Frey is a quite common name in Switzerland--it was just a guess..

Interesting that this Hans Frey isn't mentioned in the 'Aussenseiter' book which is dealing with swiss drivers..

The only familiar relation between all those FREY is the one between Walter (father) ad Lorenz (son). But I didn't even know about all of them.
