Judging by GP2 the track is good enough, but it'llbe near impossible to police driver gaining advantage by going off the track.

They should probably cover some sections of the run off in speed bumps. Like a lot.

Come on, that doesn't sound like an FIA solution! Let's cover it in custard! Or travelators like at the airport...

I might be the only one but I hate this track.

Too much runoffs.

No risk.

does lewis wear his earrings when he's driving?

Probably, depending on the gauge of the piercing they can close and seal within a few minutes. Barbell fell out of one of mine and within the 5 minutes it took to clean the bar the flesh had resealed and had to be repierced.

Tilke needs to retire asap.

Amen to that.

The guy has no clue. I've been crying at how he does not even learn from his own designs which are successful like Bahrain with its wide exits rather than entries promoting overtaking. He does not know how to design a track with good overtaking zones nowadays. Even though he has produced some in the distant past.

I change my opinion on Bottas frequently. Sometimes I feel he is slightly overhyped, and other times I feel he has potential to be a top drivers. The latter was applicable today, that was a stonker of a lap.

Same here. I don't rate Bottas as real top top material or some kind of new Mika Hakkinen, but today he was really matching the Mercedes in clearly inferior machinery. I thought S1 and S2 he was helped by low drag of Williams, but looking at onboard comparision to Lewis he also ran him close in S3. Amazing lap by Bottas.

Nice overview.

It'd be great if, for next year, all the various companies, teams, media-outlets and other reporters could agree on the numbering of the corners. Right now the total seems to fluctuate between 18 and 21. Alternatively, some proper names could be helpful. It has the added benefit of giving the track some character. 'Turn 3' will never be as exciting as 'Eau Rouge', 'Parabolica', 'Arquibancada', 'Blanchimont' or indeed 'Maggotts and Becketts'. Turkey's 'Turn Eight' being perhaps the only exception.

I would guess not, I know good old Sid Watkins used to tell drivers to remove all jewellery before a race, not sure if they still do it. Tbh I wish he wouldn't wear such girly earrings anytime, looks rather silly.

Not to my tastes, but more power to him if he digs them.  However it's kinda silly if he jumps out of the car, then dons them just for the PC. Could be sponsored to wear them i guess.

I wouldn't describe Bahrain as particularly impressive tbh, it's certainly not as good as Malaysia anyway. I also think the Red Bull Ring would actually be quite popular if the original Oesterreichring wasn't there first, it is pretty tough considering how few corners it has, and it has elevation changes, something so hideously lacking from most of F1's Tilkedromes. I dunno if it says a lot about Tilke that my two favourites of his are his first two attempts...

I agree N, though I am not so sure about Maggots. It sounds kinda ........ yucky. My favs are Acque Minerali, Piratella and (of course) Villeneuve, from the former F1 course for the San Marino GP.

Do we praise him for 2 brilliant sectors? Or criticise for not getting for front row that was on offer?

He has some serious flashes of speed sometimes, and then others not. I do think he's slightly overhyped, only slightly

Well, the usual measure is to compare these guys with their team mates. Massa has his flaws but over the years has been known to show a good turn of speed. Bottas is decisively ahead of Massa and that is a good benchmark. He's not an Alonso or a Hamilton maybe but pretty damn quick nonetheless.

I guess I am the only one who thinks this track is kinda cool. It's not like Tilke had a blank canvas. He basically had to build around existing building.

I saw an interview with the Tilke design team once where they explained their hands are pretty tied by the FIA because of what the FIA requires in the design.

Well, they could name after some Olympic medal winners http://data.huffingt...pics-sochi-2014 like the Fontana straight with the Tsuper DRS zone, the Wild corner, the Maze complex, the Riddle chicane, the Graf breaking area, the Loch gravel trap or the Magnus Moan PR area.

And then there's Clark, Jones, Bardal and a Fan zone as well.

You're right, and I did pause while writing that. Maggots and Becketts go so well together though, it'd be wrong to only mention one of them.

Acque Minerali is indeed another classic name.

I like that idea. Here's a list of all the 2014 medal winners.

Speaking as a Dutchman, I should note that the list could use some additional speedskaters. ;)
