with the Bridgestones we didn't have alternate strategies so the races weren't very dynamic neither

The lack of alternate strategies was also the result of the difficulty of overtaking (lack of DRS pre-2011), though. In the early no-refueling races of 2010, some drivers (e.g. Hamilton in Australia) tried the strategy of pitting for new option tyres and attacking, but it just did not work because they got stuck behind 2 seconds per lap slower cars for too long.

Great job from Bottas to putin that fastest lap in the end.

I see what you did there ;-)

Boooooooring. Another Valencia due to wrong tyres.

I think the post-race interviews from the drivers have disproven this theory. The praise for the tyres seemed universal, but they could not be fully exploited due to fuel saving, which was the real reason the race was uninteresting.

Just seen on twitter that for the next race in the US of A in  the drivers lounge with Bernie it will be

300px-Chuck_Norris.jpg

Chuck will also be handing out the trophies, presumably with a very strong grip and doing the podium interviews with himself asking and answering; then taking the podium babes off to infinity and beyond.

Twice.

If Chuck's unavailable maybe they can get Obama. Or even better, George W Bush, it's in Texas after all.

Sochi is the bastard child of Valencia and Mokpo. This race was an embarrassment, especially given the popularity of F1 in Russia and the amount of investment they have ploughed in to secure the race. Frankly they deserved better. If Tilke is not hanging his head in disgrace he should be ashamed.

He was, but he was also stupid... I mean...

I'm sure he hasn't thrown away the championship today, but he sure as hell made his life a whole lot more difficult.

I feel turn 3 aka that small kink is totally pointless to have. Anyone who runs wide will go on the outside like nothing happened.

I actually kinda like the track. That super fast corner where Vergne passed Magnussen early on is spectacular.

It's just a shame Pirelli brought bullet proof tyres to this race, so that we didn't get to see differing strategies.

Am I the only one who is really miffed at FOM, FOAM, or how-ever the current commercial moloch is called that controls F1? For years, drivers, team-owners, race-organisers in all the ceremonies have to walk up a very narrow path. They have to follow this procedure, then this procedure, then this, then that. No political or social comment is allowed, they basically have to act like robots following the protocol of FOM. If anyone would dare to cross through it, they can expect a very heavy fine or punishment by Ecclestone (remember Force India and the unrest in Bahrain).

And now the race is in Russia... ALL the protocol goes through the window. The drivers have to listen to the Russian anthem, at the front of the grid. Putin shows up everywhere, even at the podium, while a couple of years ago the FOM was angry because a major (and not a motorsports-bobo) presented a trophy. Putin was inside, in the room where the drivers towel off (did I see that right?)

It was really, really disgusting and I hope Ecclestone really takes a flying leap quickly for this allowing to happen.

He'd done the hard bit getting alongside, just had to be sensible but overcooked it badly

My initial thoughts were that is was an awful race. Then I'd think about what happened, and how if you told me so many drivers would do so many different things strategy wise - pitting anywhere from lap 1 to lap whatever, or anywhere from 1 stop to 3 - then I'd be certain it would have been an amazing race. But it still wasn't. It was still the worst race of the season.

I'm not sure who is more to blame; Pirelli or Tilke.

I think the track is great.  The kink allowed things like what Vergne did today happen.  The long sweep to the kink is a better start than the typical long straight-to-90 degree turn.   The off camber turns were nice.

And I liked that it wasn't a tire test today.

It was disgusting and Bernie should be thrown out for more than one reason, and Putin in the towel room was indeed a disgrace.

But ministers presenting a trophy is completely usual. It seems you haven't ever taken notice who presents the trophies - in most countries it's the Minister of Sport, the Minister of Tourism, the Minister of Economic Development, the governor of the region or something like that.

The hassle some years ago in Turkey was not that it was a politician but it was an official from the Turkish part of Cyprus, a country not recognised by the international community. In that way politics entered the stage in a way that made it - just for a moment - more important than the Grand Prix itself as a sporting contest.

And - though in a different way - there is indeed a similarity with what we saw today: that poltical ambitions could use the scene of a Grand Prix as a showcase for their own benefit.

First time in my 35 year history of watching Formula1 where I feel asleep on the sofa! Woke up with Putin staring at me!

They should fix turn 2 so there is no braking for the run into turn 3. The start would then be great.

Start time should be earlier too. With the setting sun it was hard to see what car was which in some shots on TV.

Yes but remember, Formula One is in no way political...

Didn't know where to post this so will put it here. Just thought it was a nice photo after the sad scenes of the drivers from before the GP today.
(although a slightly odd assortment of people I thought - no wonder Eddie always knows whats going on ;) )

I never fell asleep but never did a Tilkedrom give me such a retro feeling. Very mid-nineties indeed.
