I know this is probably a bit 'wet' but a discussion here at lunchtime with fathers or mothers who have [usually] sons that have gone to entirely different sports. Or sometimes done more than one sport.

I know of a few, Peter Ormbsby golf pro and serious motorsport competitor. His son is /was playing international golf. And his other son races Porsches.

Or speedway competitor Russel Carlin  whose son Sean was a champion [olympic] shot putter.

I know there is quite a few motorsport competitors whose kids have excelled at other sports. And have sometimes dabbled in motorsport too.

Rex Law, a leading competitor in racing in Queensland in the late forties and early fifties, was the grandfather of Stuart Law...

I think I spied Stuart's name somewhere in the sports pages at one time.

Bill Patterson was the son of first class tennis player Gerald Patterson.

Didn't rally driver Pat Moss have a brother who was involved in equestrian events?

Or was it the other way round?

The promising GT driver Jann Mardenborough is the son of former League footballer midfielder Steve.  Spent most of his career in the lower divisions, but had a brief spell in the top flight with Wolves - for whom he scored the winner at Anfield once.

John Smith's kids are into something that takes them to the US to compete every year or so...

It was while he was over there spending time with them he had his horrific motorcycle accident in Tennessee. Though the competition is in Florida, as I recall.

Some-time lap dasher Carol Hopwood's husband, Peter, used to compete in Sydney-Hobart and other yachting races. And Peter's wife Carol was a crew member in yachting events.

Warwick Rooklyn was a pretty handy F. Ford driver. He was also handy at the helm of a racing yacht, as per the family tradition.

In the U.S.

Sprint car racer Dick Sutcliffe's son, Rick, was a top flight baseball pitcher (Dodgers, Cubs, Indians) and is currently commentator for the international MLB Playoff telecasts.

One of Merle Bettenhausen's sons played college basketball at Southwest Missouri State.

I'm sure there are more, but being tired that's what I come up with off the top of my head.

Well...

How about mentioning the member or members of the family who were into yachting? As is the theme of the thread.

Beg pardon, Ray... Jack Rooklyn [Warwick's dad] did fairly well in a few Sydney-to-Hobart races, aboard Apollo and Ballyhoo.

Longtime Mini racer, Henry Draper is father of 3 time Olympic canoeist, Warwick Draper.

In the early 90's Henry was also racing Suzuki Swift GTIs with Mark Brame. They took an outright win in a Winton production car enduro. The first outright race win for Suzuki cars at the time IIRC.

Brother and sister both indulged in 'horsing' - Pat to a greater extent than Stirling.  And Mum, Aileen was both a horsewoman and a racing driver.

I don't know whether Stirling's son, Eliot, has competed to a significant level in any sports

Let's not forget that Scottish racer Jimmy Stewart, who ran in some non-title F1 events, had a brother named Jackie...

Jackie knew a bit about shooting, I understand.

I knew Ken Gethin had been a jockey and trainer, but I didn't realise quite how good he was until googling after reading Duncan's post. He rode the winners of many major races, including the 1952 1,000 Guineas and Indian Derby:

I've never heard of any skiers (champion or otherwise) called Fabi. For what that's worth.

Damon is a decent motorcycle racer too. how he started his motorsport career.

Indeed he did, but not really what he's best known for. As far as I'm aware he's still sharing one of the ex Stillwell (BMW) MINIs with Linda Devlin. Daughter of another Mini racer, Barry (who worked for Henry at Northern Mini Parts, when he still owned the business). HD's one of the good guys.

Therefore, to fit into the thread, you need to write:

World Champion Graham Hill fathered Damon, a well-known motorcycle racer.

Equestrianism and motorsport co-exist in quite a few families. The extended Moss-Carlsson clan has done both, over three generations. Richard Burns's sister Joanne did/does showjumping. Liz Halliday does both. Peter Gethin's dad is also mentioned above.

John Bruggerman who raced the Repco Ricardian in the late 50s here in SA had a son Richard who was quite a good eqestrian, this in the early 70s when I knew him..

I think there was a family history of eventing.
