What revived the thread was a trademark filing recently by FOM implying there would be a GP.

The FIA released the design of the Circuit:
That bit off the main straight at the top, is that pit lane or is that for the joker lap? That's what F1 needs, the introduction of a joker lap...

after looking at the track map (is that for real?), I can only think of a song by Supertramp...

Yes it's for real. It was approved by the FIA this morning. The race is going to be called the "Kevinracefan doesn't get the jokes" Grand Prix of Las Vegas...
There is no race. There is no track. No one in town that would have to agree to it has been approached. We'd welcome an event but so far nothing has happened on this end.

I'd buy tix for that..
actually, when I win powerball, I'm building a track at the Hoover dam...
that way every race can suck..

Well Long Beach is set for ICS so if F1 wants a viable go at another course then they I would argue it's going to be a street race. May as well be at night because there is nothing like that in the States right now.
Again my vote would be for Miami for some glitz but I also think Milwaukee could sustain a well rounded night time event. Lots of OW fans in the mid-west.

while that may be quite true, "furiners" and Americans aren't going to make Milwaukee a vacation destination... (Same reason Road America isn't considered, aside from the renovation required) Chicago is in region but who wants to vacation in the murder capital of U S ? Enough of that in Brazil, LOL...
Miami could work well...

I don't think any town needs to be a vacation destination so long as they can sell tickets and the businesses within the city can get behind the effort and make money.
Chicago is just down the road. F1 could advertise at Ohare and Union/Olgivie Stations. Charter bus packages could shuttle fans from Chicago to Milwaukee and offer drink specials (party bus).
So actually people could make a vacation on it. Hell put it the weekend before or after ICS at RA and folks coming from overseas can see two great shows.

the people who invest heavily to promote races disagree... this is F1, not sprint cars

I'm starting to think IMS is the best place for F1 in the USA.
F1 used to be well-attended there. Way bigger attendance than for NASCAR's Brickyard 400.
American IndyCar fans seem to be more open-minded about F1 while NASCAR is the big evil. (While European IndyCar fans seem to be more open-minded about NASCAR and more critical about F1.) My impression of the Indiana people (based on message boards and Twitter) is that many would like to see F1 returning to the IMS.
If Liberty Media was fine with F1 being only the second-biggest event at the venue, I think IMS would offer the best chances for a successful event. That being said, IMS already has its big event, they aren't going to pay a huge sanctioning fee for a race if it makes no financial sense.
That being said, would F1 at IMS offer the big nationwide publicity Liberty is looking for? I'm not totally sure. It's the most famous racing venue, at least in the USA, though even the 500 is struggling with its TV ratings. Then again, would any of those street races become permanent fixtures in the schedule? Vegas is world-famous even without F1. So is also NY, plus there will surely be residents opposing a street race and the associated street closures. Same with Miami.
But if F1 wants a well-attended event in the USA, then IMS would be the best venue for it.

Here's one, he's been saying the same thing more or less for a year... (emphasis mine)
“We would like to add a destination race in the U.S. in a location like New York, L.A., Miami, Las Vegas,” Carey said in a telephone interview. “We think we can create something that will be a really special event. Obviously the U.S. is all upsides for us. We haven’t invested in the way we need to build the U.S. market.”

They would have to pay the Hulmans to have another race there and even then it probably wouldn't happen. There is no way Mark Miles would pay a sanctioning fee and the sisters aren't going to do a deal where they struggle to break even on the gate and don't get any of the hospitality or track signage. FOM screwed them earlier and that's likely a permanent burned bridge.

In terms of attendance, yep, probably so.
Indy's smallest F1 crowd in 8 years was bigger than Austin's biggest so far in 6 years.

yeah, I agree.. Liberty would have to make a give-back first year deal and different cash split to rebuild that bridge..
It is a great venue, though.. I went to the first 2 and was blown away with how well they handle that massive of a crowd..
