The Monaro Nationals show and shine was held today at Tanunda Oval in the Barrossa Valley.

There was around 300 cars in attendance. Cars from unrestored to concours. There was pov packs, Commodores, Belmonts as well as quite a few modified cars.  They ranged over all models. Many early cars with small block, big blocl and LS engine swaps, as well as a couple of hotty sixes too.

Though there also was a a surprising amount of unrestored original early cars. Plus a reputed origional Bill Brown HDT HK 327, as well a a mock up.

My interest lies with the earlier cars, HK-HQ. After that they became fat and basically Premiers. And late model 2 door Commodores do not apeal!

The early cars I have owned by the dozen in the past as personal cars, as well as  interesting used cars. Cars I sold for $3-5000 in the 80s have appreciated about 100%.DSCF0593.jpgDSCF0591.jpgDSCF0584.jpgDSCF0588.jpgDSCF0590.jpgDSCF0594.jpgDSCF0587.jpgDSCF0586.jpgDSCF0592.jpg

Pic 1 HK 327 manual. This is the model that won Bathurst in 68. Same color from memory.

Pic 2 HK 307 Auto. A car very similar and very close in rego number too to one I owned in the 70s.

Pic 3 HK 307 Auto. Older resto with a bit of accesorie 'bling'

Pic 4 HK 307 Manual. A car that many claim were never made. I have owned 4! None as nice as this. There was a HT 307 manual there too. A car that I have never seen before.

Pic5 HT 350 manual.

Pic6 HG 350 manual. Original unrestored car

Pic7 HQ 350 LS auto Coupe. Early. The LS was a bit more luxurious than the GTS. softer ride and more ride height etc. I once owned a 350 Statesman that color. The original laquer was not quite as 'in your face' as that one done in 2 pack

Pic 8 HQ 350 manual Coupe. Restored very original early HQ.

Pic 9. HQ 350 auto 4 door GTS. Update. Unrestored original car. Originally owned until about 5 years ago by a country SA Holden dealer as his personal car.

HQs came in a myriad of specs. 5/71 to mid 73 were the early cars and then to the end of 74 were updated with slightly better seats, entirely different trim materials and a new range of paint colors. Mechanical specs were largely the same.

The cars in the background may also be of interest to many. Including the Commodore 2 doors also sold in Europe and the US.

NOW, a quiz. What have all the cars pictured have in common,, apart from a Monaro badge?

Is it that they all have Chev engines Lee? Or just that you wish that you had kept all the cars you had, as a nice little nest egg. I assume you actually mean 1000 percent increase from those 80s prices.

Correct. you win a pat on your back from yourself!

Yeah, like so many people it would be great to have all the toys of 30 years ago. But if they were not sold in period I would not have earnt any money then.

I did have quite a few Holden powered cars in period. mostly HQs. And a few 6 cyl cars in early models too.

Not just Holdens either, a few Valiants and GTs also.

From a period slide. In fact this should be the Monaro's racing debut meeting.

September 15, 1968 Sandown 'Datsun 3 Hour' meeting - Dandenong Road Corner. With a few achievers from the sport driving the 3 cars shown that day.

So taking Lee's quizzing lead, the hints are: - two of them are AGP winners, one of them a World Championship winner, one of them an Armstrong 500 winner, one a Bathurst winner and all pretty well known. Probably just made it too easy!

IIRC the VF Pacer also debuted at Catalina for the Wills 75 Enduro on June 15 1969.

Some nice pics there. We had planned to go but didn't get the car done in time. Looking forward to seeing more pics. Sounds like it was a good weekend.

I got some pics sent me from there of a yellow HK GTS badly burnt from engine fire.  :( Poor bugger.

Social media! I heard that in the queu for lunch, was told it was a HJ. 10 min later someone showed me a pic on their phone of a HK. A friend owns one like that with no stripes. I have to find his ph no and check. It has done about 2000miles in thirty years!

I have no other pics, I got there with a flat battery in the camera

Red HKs all seem to have disapeared, not one there on Saturday.

BTW, they had a hillclimb with about 60 cars on Sunday at Collingrove. Everyone had a good time, noone crashed or broke anything. That is always good.

Ok, so Des West and Ron Marks get the prize for debuting the Monaro at Catalina.

The Sandown photo should be the cars of:- #42 Monaro - Alan Jones & Clive Millis. #24 Datsun 1600 - John Roxburgh & Doug Whiteford and #51 Alfa Romeo 1750GTV - Doug Chivas & John French.

327s were made in several colors in 2 different specs.

Color wise I think I have seen every GTS color except gold.

Spec wise series 1 had the alternator way up in front of the passenger side head [eg pic 2] and series 2 had it bolted [upgraded heads] the the drivers side head like a 350 and used the long waterpump like a 350 too. There was other minor mods and reputedly S2 had a bit more power too. The heads were a bit better.
