The team has stated they didn't buy the car.   They have Ferrari to use for validation info.  Why buy a two year old Marussia with no IP when you can utilize the services of Ferrari?

True. Sorry, I thought I had read somewhere that they bought the 2014 car, but not the 2015 IP, whoops, I am wrong.

Truthfully I have become ignorant of the aero testing regs and wasn't sure if teams were limited to 60% models.

I'm skeptical how much assistance Ferrari is going to offer.  How many resources will they offer considering the mess they are currently in?  Perhaps Haas can get the graveyard shifts   Plus I'm going to take what any team principal says with a grain of salt.  The perception of buying a back markers car even for validation probably wouldn't look good.  Better we, potential drivers and sponsors think Ferrari will provide it.

Right now Ferrari have one goal, and helping a potential rival isn't it.  Can you image what getting beaten by Haas would do for Ferrari...

If I was CH, I would want to be crystal clear about what I was getting from Ferrari, and certain that I could validate it for myself if that involved designing all/part of the car.  I would also want a Plan B in my back pocket.

Someone better tell Marchionne then because the deal with Haas is not only for engines and drive trains but for engineering assistance and other bits that are legal to sell under the regs.  That's been the plan all along. Ferrari have been keen on the customer car idea for a while and under the current regs this is about a close as they will get.  They basically get a B team/testing team and get paid for it to boot.  It's a win for both parties.

Sorry Loki, I understand the logic, but if Ferrari can't get one team set with a front running car, I can't see them doing that for two teams.  Something will have to give, and it will be the support for the non-Ferrari team.  All the A-grade resources, and the CAD/engineering time will be prioritised to the home team, and CH is going to have to learn to be patient and understanding about it - not qualities that I expect to see in an F1 team boss.

So if Ferrari are so involved in the thought process of Haas then Fry and Tombazis will be a no go.

Who is CH? I have a feeling you don't properly know who owns the team...

Don't think anyone ever suggested Ferrari would just hand over their best staff. What Haas will get (and I'm sure he knows this already) are junior staff being given the chance to develop experience and show their skills. For the big teams, having a B-team is more than just an opportunity to place drivers. It's also an opportunity to place junior staff you don't need right now, but who you expect/hope to step up when the current senior heads leave.

I don't think there is much more than the engines and gearbox that Ferrari can actually sell. If I remember right, Haas' original plan was based upon a relaxation of the customer car regulations, but as that hasn't happened he's going to have to build or outsource more of the car.

The regs have been relaxed where a team is able to buy more of the components but there is still a minimum they must design and manufacture or have a subcontractor manufacture the designs.  Drivetrain and engine can be outsourced (obviously) as IIRC brakes, some suspension parts. cooling, steering and data aquisition to name a few. The tub and related aero parts still have to be IP of the team but they can have others build them.

Haas said his F1 team will operate out of Ferrari’s wind tunnel rather than his own one in Charlotte. F1’s regulations stipulate only one wind tunnel can be utilized.

Close to the consultants Ferrari will provide. Makes sense. Also with all that excess wind tunnel capacity teams now have with restrictive rules.

What that says to me is that there may be more design coming from Marinello than Kannapolis.  Windshear doesn't have a scale tunnel.  All they have is the full size tunnel.  I read something last year that they were building a small scale tunnel because there was demand for it in the area. Don't know if they've started yet.

I read a quote from Haas a while ago that the Windshear tunnel had been refurbished in order to take a 60% model. I think this is just to start off things. At some point in the future as he builds up his engineering team they will move to the Windshear tunnel.

Haas planning a yellow livery...

http://www.motorspor...016-team-report

"We would love to have a car in line with the company's image," said Haas, whose corporate logo is actually red and silver.

"But it needs to be good, too, because all these cars in silver or grey appear almost identical to each other.

"I would like a colour that makes us distinguishable," said the Californian. "I do like yellow."

From Autosport:

Will the cars be bedecked in a US theme given that red is common to both Ferrari and the US?

"We've looked at several [concepts]," says Haas, taking the lead on this one.

"We had one that was basically based on the natural colours of a flame. We thought that was kind of interesting: it starts off white, then goes to yellow, which then goes to red, but it would be just natural colours that you would see.

"Then maybe the other ideas that we are talking about was basically a flat black car with a lot of yellow (Maranello's regional colour) highlights on it. The other, a lot of red, something like that...

Silver and dark grey, how very interesting…

I'm sure glad that's just an ad.

I think Gene said he is going to go for bold colours, possibly yellow.
