I competed at the Collingrove South Australia Hillclimb on Sunday.

A good entry of I believe 120 plus cars of all descriptions. Open wheelers, sports cars, tin tops,  family hacks, drift cars [they are everywhere!] a collection of Maxi Minis plus the usual horde of AWD things.

I arrived to drizzly rain, for me NOT again. I went there twice last year in this car and got rained out twice!  Eventually everyone got 3-4 dry runs out of 6 before it came down again.

I competed in my LC Torana that I last used at Easter at Mallala. See Lyntons pics in the Easter Mallala thread.

I drove like an old fart,, though did get a couple of decent runs in. Though slower than I was 20 years ago in the same car. though it did have more power then.

I just put that up to make sure the post actually got up!

The previous time I put up the text and pics then submitted it and I got 'You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community'

Mods,, I have had similar problems doing this before.

Didn't I explain to you before, or was it someone else (certainly in the last week) that this means the type of file the picture is saved as. If it's a bitmap (.bmp) it won't post, only .gif and .jpg files.

I also think I mentioned you need to get Irfanview so you can size and crop your photos.

Ray, exactly the same I have done this before, and these pics too. It is a site issue.

And the size to me is just right. They fill the page but do not go over like some on here.

I did tell him that he should have chamoised it! The dust and drizzle had done a lovely job of making every car dirty.

Lee, you can't get that response if you have a .jpg or .gif...

Check the photos you were trying to post that time and see what kind of file they are.

Can't see why you need to do anything different.....but then I'm not an expert at eveything. ;)

The message he relates he had with the previous photos indicates they were not .jpg or .gif images...

That's what the word 'extension' is about. He has to go back to those pics and check them, but it seems he's not likely to do that.

Ray, I said before same pics same format. I have had the problem before, again all the same format

It is this site that is the problem.

Initially I could not even get new topic to open. Which has happened before too.

Neat solution for a breather catch tank on the Webered straight six motor. What car is it?

Looks like a Torana, Roger...

The engine is a Holden six.

Thanks, Ray, I thought it was a Holden, but hesitated to put my head over the parapet....  BTW that is a nice touch, too, with the flat bar as a stay  across the inlet manifolds. Is vibration a specific problem? Also, what are the vertical wired rods sticking up off what  might be the hold-down screws on the rocker cover? Are they just for ease of removal?  Just curious.

Yeah...they look like quick-release with safety wires...I wouldn't think a Holden six would vibrate all that much unless maybe it had a wild cam and maybe lightened flywheel...

Believe me Holden 6s especially 202s viabrate bad. The blue 3.3 crank is better but 15lb heavier so without expensive knife edgeing are just too heavy. That is why the rocker cover bolts are wired. The stay on the carbs  is primarily for ease of installation. Apart from regular proper maintenance that car has had no real mods in 25 years.

Yes it does have a fairly big cam and an alloy flywheel. Though I am not revving it too hard, about 6000 only. Car is for sale. Get it out there and use it but do not blow it up. The other Torana there on the day was being revved harder, supposedly has about 40 more HP but was slower than me. And broke a cam on the last run! Something that seems common these days of bigger cams. GpN cars seem to do it regularly. And most still only use 6800. Though again are making more power.

My no1 engine in the Classic Supermodified on a big night does use 6800. Better bottom end, same cam and less effective head. Net power probably much the same.

Broke! Probably a bit like Doigs axle.

Like lots of cams in recent time. The last two lobes were not turning. 590 lift will be part of that!

That car is quite quick, it does 16s around Mallala and is what an IP car should be. Everything works and is where it is supposed to be. Most are now pure Sports Sedan on radials.

So it broke between the distributor drive and No 6 cam lobes?

Or between No 5 lobes and the distributor drive?

I did say 'exact'...

The last two lobes were not turning, after that was established it was retired for the day. It still ran and was driven on the trailer. The Mitsibits guys are both ex Chrysler and know a few things about those engines.

Kim has been running that car about 25 years!

Actually a lot of long term cars there on the weekend. The Centura, 25 years, his business partner has been racing his about the same length of time though it is resting [with a broken motor] ATM, Doigs Asp over 40 years, Max Clarks EH he has owned for 47 years! Neil Oatways K code XY Fairmont  since new, The Deluca Anglia in the same family for about 40 years.

It must have broken between the distributor drive gear and the No 6 exhaust lobe then...

Otherwise it wouldn't have been running.

Too many people have got greedy. Cam lift, duration and springs are off the planet for a cast iron cam. And roller cams are still quite expensive and on some engines a real problem making the oiling work. Or to mount sideplates & etc.

Though Ford with 1 73 rocker ratio have always been greedier than most.

I too have seen a V twin Clevo. Harleys do it better!

In my travels this morning 12/ 4/14 I spent an hour or so at Collingrove. The weather was overcast with the odd spit but it was dry. I have a few pics taken with my phone. It does an ok job but slow and clunky to focus, zoom and click.

And yes I was too lazy to start a new thread.

[1]Regular TNF contributor Fred Deuce,s hillclimbing Curtis midget. 2.5 Daimler with 8 Mikunis. Trick! And quite quick too.

[2] Past Begg Formula 5000 driver.

[3] Past Australian F2 champion.

[4] Sports Sedan. I like the external roll cage!

[5] Quick VW. just for Greg!

[6] Carby fed supercharged RB31. Quite quick.

[7] Fred Deuce. 2.5 Daimler Curtis midget. I think I may get my SuperModified out to give him some opposition. And yes it has been up the hill before,,, as a speedway demonstration.013.jpg016.jpg015.jpg019.jpg018.jpg020.jpg023.jpg

Both the open wheelers were bike engines. The beetle was a big one!! It sounded very healthy. A VW based engine. Not as fast though as the white one that seems to have disapeared from the scene.

Lee, Thanks for posting the pics. Yesterday was the first trip up the hill on the new rubber.

Run 1. 39.81. As the day progressed and a bit of adjustment of tyre pressures I managed to get down to 37.08 on Run 5

Run 6 I was about .2 quicker but had to abort after running a bit wide up the top due to debris on the track and another vehicle that had stopped on the previous run.

Next meeting 36's should be achievable.

Fred, is your car the one I ran against there back in '77?

At that event I was driving Peter Hitchin's Hudson Special and my main opposition was an aging bloke in a speedcar, I'm pretty sure it had a grey Holden engine.

That Daimler engine looks good, was it hard to get it running on those Mikunis?

Ray, Can you expand on what car it was that you ran against in 1977? Sounds interesting.

As for my car this is a new construction built over the last 7-8 years . Has been running since Oct '13.

As for running on the Mikunis. I have to say the engine was built up back in the 80's and fitted to a hot rod here in Adelaide. I managed to purchase it about 9-10 years ago and then started planning to build the car. That said, the carbs were running way too rich which was a result of pod filters being too restrictive. Otherwise they run 120 jets and standard needles. The biggest problem was discovering that a previous owner trying to sort mixture problems wound the idle circuit screws into the carb bodies causing the tips to shear off. That meant drilling them out making new mixture screws etc. Once that was sorted it was just a mattter of setting them up on the  bench to ensure everthing is right. Found one leaky float and some worn jets. Lesson here is to check everything when playing with second hand carbs. Even if the jets have the same number on them get your number drills out and measure them.

Once on the car its a matter of getting each bank synchronized. Then run the vacuum gauge over them. Runs quite well and running on avgas the plugs produce a nice coffee brown colour.

Mal West was the bloke I was up against...

He did a 46.99s run that day, I did a 45.92. We had both gone quicker each run we made, but I was struggling with the effort required to steer the old beast in the tight stuff up the top and I had to stuff pillows behind my back to get me closer to the wheel in later runs.

From very vague recollection I think that car went to Dean Qualman who sprinted it a few times. I feel it was a Harry Neale driven car that had at one stage a V860,

Mal West died about 10 years ago.

John Lemm may have pics of Dean in the car doing regularity. SA 65

Greg,  the blue LIbre was built by Greg Ackland of Leongatha in Vic (He was 2013 AHCC champ in a later car) and it runs a Kawasaki, can't remember if it's a 1200 or stroked to 1600.   I think the other car was built by Glenn White who used to live in the Leongatha area, too, and if that is the car it runs a Gen 2 Hayabusa motor of about 1340cc.    Cheers
