I think there are not very much racing patronages in Formula One nowadays. Perhaps Vijay Mallya, but I he make advertising for his companies.

In former days there were some Grand Prix racing patronages like Teddy Yip. This guy is so fascinating.

Were there some other Grand Prix racing patronages like Yip who sponsors different drivers and teams? Not even in F1 since 1950, but also before?

What about Colin Crabbe? Racing as 'Antique Automobiles' was, I suppose, promoting his car dealing, but I doubt if racing was a wholly commercial operation that was actually making money, any more than Wheatcroft's racing would have substantially boosted his building business.

Mimmo Dei and his Scuderia Centro Sud campaigned for many seasons in F1, helped some talented drivers along the way.

...with Jack Durlacher at times...

Rudi van der Straten (sp?), Tommy Atkins, Jacques Swaters, Johnny Claes.

Nice examples, but I think Teddy Yip is outstanding. He spent his money in different teams, different drivers and different racing series...

So did Count Rudi...

Then again, perhaps Teddy and Rudi had more to spend?

Count Volpi must have spent millions of lira on sportscars in the 1960s, but also some on F1. I believe he was connected with the Serenissima engine project.

I presumed that Teddy Yip was using the opportunities to promote his business interests in some way - even if a large component of what drove his involvement was enthusiasm for the sport.
Where would you draw the line between someone like Yip who we seem to be describing as a 'patron' and someone like Martini, who we might more often think of a 'sponsor', but fits the other criteria laid out here thus far?

As did Wheatcroft. And Sid Taylor? Yes, they tended to be with the same teams – because they were their own teams.

No, but as soon as we introduce 'spending money in different series' as a criterion, we have to broaden our net!

Perhaps Team VDS didn't go into F1, though I wouldn't be surprised to have someone post on here that they had a personal link with someone as they got mobile in World Championship events, they certainly had a Grand Prix link.

Warwick Brown won the Australian Grand Prix in 1977 driving the VDS Lola T430 F5000.

No mention of F1 in the earlier thread about Count Rudi:

http://forums.autosp...an-der-straten/

which includes a link to this potted history (in French)of the VDS team:

There were a lot of cases of small groups of enthusiasts clubbing together to help fund a racing driver get a drive in F1; some examples being Jolly Club, Scuderia Centro Sud, Equipe National Belge. Then there were teams set up by former drivers such as Scuderia Archille Varzi.

Was the Scuderia Achille Varzi set up by Varzi?  I have always understood that the Argentine team was named as a tribute to the late Achille Varzi.  Or is that another Scuderia Achille Varzi?

Both, sort of. It was an Argentine team competing in Europe, using Varzi's mechanic(s) and presumably his facilities, too.

If that comes into it, then the MANZ 'Driver to Europe' scheme, which put Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme on the path to F1, should count...

But, as it was commercially backed, the TAA Driver to Europe prize for winning the annual FFord pointscore in Australia wouldn't. It put Larry Perkins on his path.

Johnny Claes was entered in a Gordini for the 1952 Italian GP by Vicomtesse de Walckiers. I searched the web last year for information about this entry. Does anyone know anything?
