In some of the one litre F2/F3  races held in Sweden in the mid 1960's it was reported that Freddy used a BMW one litre engine. Is this correct, and what was the story ?

I have a vague memory of having seen race programmes with Kottulinsky entered in a Lotus-BMW, but I am quite sure the Lotuses he raced in the 60's (first a 35, then a 41 and later a 59) all had Ford engines.  If the Lotus-BMW name was used in 1964, there is the remote possibility that he considered building a BMW based engine for the 1964 season, since the Swedish championship for that year was for F2 (including FJ as per the 1963 regulations), but that the project was scratched, either because it was unfeasble or because of the announcement that from 1965 onwards the championship would be for F3, which of course would not leave room for a BMW engine since pushrod BMW engines are few and far between.  A more likely explanation is that he just added the BMW name for promotional reasons, since he ran a garage servicing and repairing BMW cars.

I just remembered that 1965 was the first season in which Kottulinsky raced his Lotus 35 (in 63 and 64 he raced the ex-Troberg Lola Mk V) so that puts an end to the idea that he might have considered developing a BMW-based 1-litre F2 engine.  From 1965 onwards the races were for F3, which because of the pushrod engine requirement excluded a BMW alternative.  Hence, promotion for his garage business remains the most likely alternative for the "BMW" moniker.

So his Lotus 35 ran a Ford 105E/109E, not BMW.

What happened to the car ?

According to F1 Register records, Kottulinsky used a BMW engine in Scandinavian F3 events in 1966.  He came to England at the start of October for the European F3 Challenge at Brands but I don't see any mention in Autosport of the engine he was using.

Interesting, If it was a BMW pushrod moter, which base engine was he using ??

At that time both Glas and Borgward motors were raced in German international races, the latter in a Lotus 18/21 running in F2 trim

At the Skarpnäck race in May 1st 1966 Kottulinsky were racing a Lotus-BMW... according to the starting list in the race programme. But no mention of a BMW engine in the motor magazines of the time. In the other races his car is called a Lotus-Ford, and in an interview he says it is a Lotus 35 from 1965 with a 94hp Cosworth engine. He says there that he had ordered a reserve engine from Cosworth, but no mention of a BMW.
