Maybe Bernie got the grammar wrong, like Lionel Hutz.
"No, more money for you!"

Well, the time line seemed to be Ecclestone talking to CVC first, which I guess tells us why things came out as it appears to be.
So F1 drops in value, Ecclestone buys up the pieces and starts selling again to someone else. Deja vu.

For what? They can't possibly be eligible to score points if only those two teams field a third car.

He made such a big deal slagging off the smaller teams about their business model. Imagine if their business model included a 100m backhander. What would Ferrari's business model look like without that backhander?
Media is scared **** of him and so there is no one challenging his position.

Ferrari should know better than to put F1 in jeopardy like this considering their whole brand is built on racing.

…but I thought the Concorde Agreement only said three teams would be obliged to run three cars (only two scoring CC-points), IF the grid fell to eight teams and 16 cars. We're on 18 now, and I thought there wasn't any immediate danger of Sauber, Lotus or Force India going bust? They're just on very thin ice, which they've been for the last three years really.

Adam Parr, obviously, but i'd like to hear it from somebody official.
If there are 3 cars next year it will be anounced soon. The teams need some time to get this done

Torro Rosso might get shut down if Red Bull are running 3 cars that would give you 16 cars..
Red Bull only have 3 drivers signed up at the moment, one of them is a 17 year old rookie, fits in perfectly with their plans.

Their current customers couldn't care less about racing. Ferrari as a car brand is a plaything for the rich, a symbol of status. Nothing more.

How is that fair? If the third car scores a podium, it automatically takes away constructor points from a team that finishes 4th.
Either all teams field a third car or none, otherwise it's not a level playing field.

What it needs is someone to take one for the team. Sauber, say. Instead of competing next season, they should basically bring legal proceedings against F1/the FIA for being a cartel. Abuse of the market. Ferrari getting a bribe is not legally fair. Red Bull getting a bribe is not legally fair. If Sauber could show this, it could blow open the whole game.
Unfortunately, by the time the EU ruled on it, we'd probably all be using jetpacks.

I've managed to avoid seeing any Bernie interviews in the last few weeks but in a moment of stupidity watched one with Eddie Jordan yesterday, and yeah.. it was like what he had said in Austin was never said. It was a horrible interview and regretted watching it. I can't stand his energy as a human being and can't take anything he says seriously.
Nothing with this issue would surprise me. In his mind, all of the lower teams are basically incompetent despite knowing/recognising that they are payed in an unequal way. That's their problem obviously. Never mind that it's not self sustaining and whoever ends up in those positions (even Ferrari or McLaren if they slipped back that far) would be in just as bad of a situation. Anyone who doesn't score points will end up in that situation and can't stay their forever. Regardless of how much backing they have behind them. So in other words.. there will always be teams battling for survival in F1. You need to have quite a bit of success in F1 to be able to break even, and it's virtually impossible for scratch built new teams to ever get that far.
I still can't get over how he complained about promoters needing to come into the modern times in order to sell tickets. Criticising others for being behind the times? WTF? Meanwhile F1 has no youtube presence, and no way to watch races live on their website and live timing this season has actually gone backwards and is worse than it was 5 years ago. There is no online subscription service and about the only thing they do have that promotes F1 is those highlights videos of the race. Which are only 3-4 mins long and never show the true context of the race properly anyway. Why is there no way to watch past races on demand? Or watching races live with different camera angle options? As opposed to NBA.com (to name one example) which posts like 30 videos per day, both on their own site and also YT. And then anyone on YT who posts videos for them (basically promoting F1 and doing their job for them) gets their videos deleted.
Come into the modern world? The hypocrisy is mind boggling. Bernie's not struggling financially in any way, but is the first to pull out the "begging bucket" as soon as he negotiates circuits for future contracts. Which he does pretty irresponsibly too if you consider all of the historic or vintage tracks that have left the calender.. to be replaced by new tracks, with those new tracks being replaced a season or two later. Tracks are built up from scratch and then ditched a year or two later. Every new country F1 goes to becomes crazier and less well known. Obscure oil funded countries. And what's with all of these night races and pressurising venues to race at night, and the same time that F1 is trying to portray an "image" of being eco friendly?
F1 has no problems making profit, not struggling in any way.. large in part to Bernie's tactics layed out above. But ironically the bottom half of the grid see pretty much none of it so it still can't be sustainable. WTF is that? Not even the official website sees much of it.
The list is endless. Purely motivated by self interest to the point where it is sickening.
I don't know what F1 will be like when he goes, but it can't be any worse. There is a rotten culture in F1 and it starts from the top and sets a tone and then trickles downwards into all of the teams. And then people look at pay drivers for example, and it basically becoming about drivers who are rich rather than their talent. It's easy to isolate the smaller issues and try to band aid fix them. But in an overall context, it all starts from the top.

Is it possible for a championship organiser to not be a cartel?

My take on this: this is just posturing from Bernie and CVC. They must know that asking the top teams to run 3 cars is not a simple ask. There are all sorts of weird rules about third cars written in the contracts, and as the rules are currently written, third cars cannot score championship points. Without rule changes, why would a top team sign on for a deal like that? It involves spending a lot of money for little bottom line reward.

Of course. You can earn a place in the Tour de France for instance. But you have to buy your way into F1 - to compete teams to which F1 gives money.

What about allowing the second league teams to use V8's?

Nobody is making the V8's anymore. M, R and F certainly have no interest in reviving production and Cosworth's engine is so rubbish that it'd probably make less power than the current engines.
