Here's a question from somebody (yr fthfl srvnt)who generally knows zero, and cares less, about production saloon car racing. What particularly striking or unusual liveries does anyone recall on Triumph Dolomite Sprints during the 1970s? I would appreciate some education here.

Yes, a Steppe too far.

As for Dolly liveries, BL Uniprat was quite, er, subtle. Always reminds me of that other BL livery that was a feature of the "BL Jaguar" Xj12 Coupes...complete with BL flying helmet logo etched into the glass of the windscreen..no cheapskate printed plastic sunscreen for that car!

An unforgettable Dolly Mixture especially for anyone in the vicinity of Club at the '79 British GP meeting.

This Broadspeed example was quite striking, completely forgotten who drove it ?

Seriously Triple X, as in over 18's only, Dolly Mixture.

Link deleted due to virus warnings, Google :- "Triumph Dolomite Sprint French Advert" and you'll get the picture.

Don't look for anything this side of the world...

Even Alexandra Surplice raced hers in bog standard colours. There may have been one here that emulated the red-white-and-blue, perhaps even with a Union Jack on the roof. Nothing more.

The only one that I know, and it is still the same is yellow with a black vinyl roof. Paint by BL.

The only GpC log booked car that has never had a rollcage. I think raced twice and sprinted and hillclimbed extensively.

I spoke to the owner the other week. It has the engine in bits [are not they all!] but is complete in the shed.

The Hodgson cars were painted up, as well as from memory the Jag Parts car?

Just googled it, the Jag Parts car was ex Hodgson. Last raced as a GPA car by Martin Power in 85.

And both of the Hodgson cars are still racing.

To be fair they were class winners. So actually a fair impression.

And I do not even like the things, though they were an attractive little car in their day.

My old boss in the late 1970s had a 911 Targa and he was lent a Dolly Sprint when the Porsche was being serviced. He said that didn't want to give it back.

I was doing my apprenticeship at Caffyns in Sussex at this time. As BL and JRT dealers (as well as Rolls-Royce and Leyland commercials), we were bombarded with news letters, and data on what was going on with our suppliers, including Unipart. There was one Dolly that was white with a black vinyl roof that was covered in different coloured circles of differing sizes, though who drove it, no idea. The F3 engine that Mansell used was supposedly based on a Dolly lump, as was the Stag V8 (Dolly times two), and the engines in the original SAAB turbos was basically a Dolly lump, just built properly!

My favourite Dolly colour scheme was the metalic British Racing green one, with all the graphics done in the same shade of silver, a picture of which (with me having a little go) will appear as soon as I find it.

They weren't bad cars, just rusted well, and as a race car, just not stiff enough, so the colour schemes were proably to distract the public from their short comings!

Doug,

If you take a look inside THE WORKS TRIUMPHS IN DETAIL, which is published this very week  (yes, OK - Advert, sorry ....), you will see several of the 'works'/Broadspeed liveries in the images ....

And yes, Tony Dron was very helpful.

Broadspeed ran one in Hermetite livery IIRC in 1978. Had some unusual drivers in it on occasion, I recall Geoff Lees for example.

Martin Hines had their sponsorship at the same time for his Zip Superkarts.
