Sorry, even more OT than Eric Brown on Desert Island Discs, but I think some (many?) here may be interested.

Following its recent re-opening after a £40million refurbishment, the IWM is apparently planning to close its library, reading room and dispose of its collection of archive material, in a bid to save £4million.

Link to BBC News article http://www.bbc.co.uk...london-29966987 and Google for more info.

It's absurd.

There is, of course, a petition https://www.change.o...h-and-education

Can I assume that the effects will be digitalized before disposal?

Errm ... in the interest of clarity: at present this is purely speculation on behalf of the Prospect union, based on the fact that the IWM has to make cuts due to a reduction in its grant. (What was Mr Miliband saying about 'vested interests' just yesterday?)

That BBC story has been filleted from an article which appeared in The Bookseller the previous day. Note that it omits this passage:

A spokesman for IWM told The Bookseller: "The change programme seeks to ensure IWM can continue to respond to challenges and opportunities, build on our successes to date, improve and update ways of working across the organisation and reduce IWM's net expenditure by £4million per annum to account for changes to funding and increases in pension contributions. IWM aims to achieve the expenditure change by reducing costs and increasing our income through further commercial activity."

They added: "The consultation period for the organisational restructuring element of IWM's change programme has now begun. We are working closely with those who may be affected by the change proposals and will continue to do so until the end of the year. Any announcements regarding changes at IWM will be made early next year (2015)."

Thanks for the extra information. I have to admit to not having done any additional research, but (apart from sounding like an absolutely absurd idea) it did touch a bit of a nerve as my late mother had worked in the IWM library for many years…

Anyhoo, hopefully the powers that be will realise that closing it wouldn't go down well, if they do consider it as an option.

Is a museum without an archive still a museum?
