In 1936 Luigi Chinetti finished 22nd at the Monte Carlo Rally. He drove a Ford and his co-drive was Garteau. Does anyone know what model Ford? Does anyone have an information on Garteau? Many thanks.

The site in the link below features the event programme and entry list, and photos of many of the entrants, one of which is captioned as being Chinetti's car. In both entry list and photo caption his co-driver is listed as J. Gastaud:

ETA: ... and they get a mention in this article from the Motor Sport archive:

Chinetti and Gastaud had shot off the road on their Ford but were towed back by Dobell.

Although the entry list says Ford, in France it was most likely a Matford. Here it is in a ditch, looking remarkably like this picture of a Matford Cabriolet, which I believe was based on the Ford 48 ...

According to the programme, the co-driver was the same Jacques Gastaud who - as you're aware - shared his Alfa at Le Mans in 1935 and they started from Tallinn.

A bit more research suggests the exact model number would be a Matford V8-68: from the look of this picture, the early Matford cabriolets retained the rumble/dickey seat, which is obvious in the picture above.

Matfords were French-bodied, based on chassis from Ford Cologne. The earliest ones featured separate headlights as above, but they were quickly re-designed with faired-in ones. The above picture is from the selection here:

There are pictures on the net of a very similar 1936 Matford cabriolet in grey - with rumble/dickey seat - bodied by Charles Duval of Boulogne-sur-Seine. Only major difference appears to be the headlights. A Google Image search for Matford 36 Cabriolet Duval will find them.
