I know double points would ruin F1. I made plans to not watch the race. The rivalry between Rosberg and Hamilton is one big soap opera, and I really didn't have any preference to any driver. Everything was set out for me to miss this race. But what happened? I watched it anyways.
What possessed me to watch the race? Maybe it was the natural reaction everyone has to watch a train wreck. It's not like I was expecting something good to happen - in fact, I flat out hated the race. Everything that happened just seemed to make me more and more miserable. Every lap was like tearing a piece of flesh off me. Both Williams made the podium, but it didn't seem fair or legitimate to me. I really can't explain it much further. It just felt... bad.
Should I feel bad? I don't know what to do now. The sport is pretty much doomed now. It's pretty much inevitable that there will really only be a few teams left, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull, and maybe Williams. The rest are too poor or too slow to compete. And in the end, if F1 goes the way of the dinosaur we'll point to one key reason why it failed - not the economy, not environmentalism (or lack thereof), not the artificial ways to make the races appeal to mainstream audiences, not Bernie Ecclestone (despite his best attempts to try), but politics. Nobody could agree on a solution, nobody wanted to negotiate a better deal, and nobody was interested in the better interest of the sport, but only in themselves. And even if they do turn around within the start of the season, I doubt it will be in time to reverse the damage done by the inaction of the teams.
