Just seen the excellent Jim Clark documentary on BBC4, made by Mark Stewart(Jackie's Lad), some great archive footage and interviews with Jim who talks very openly, just shows how much people like Jim are missed when people interviewed nearly 50 years later, still get emotional, I had a tear in my eye when the great Dan Gurney broke down, only small gripe, it should have been longer than an hour.

If you have get the chance to visit the Jim Clark Room at Duns, it is well worth the effort.

I watched it on Sunday night, although it has been on previously. It is a wonderful film, different times, different values. I have said before that I found the procession into the funeral most touching. The harrowed look on ACBC's face was telling, walking in with Kate Eccles on his arm, shared grief.
Dan Gurney' s Foreword in Peter Darley's Jim Clark at Team Lotus encapsulates his views and feelings on Jim Clark and that day at the funeral. True heroes both.

This earlier discussion about the Clark film (plus the others about Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart) may be of interest. It includes input from Mark Stewart and Mark Craig, both of whom were instrumental in the making and screening of the films:

Does anyone know if they're going to rebroadcast the Hill and Stewart films?

It is an excellent documentary. 'Innocent talent', a beautiful description of Clark by his former team-mate.

But...

Pity about the music, though. Mixed in too loudly, and the choice... brrr.

Apparently not at the moment: there's a page on the BBC website for 'Driven' - last shown 2011.

http://www.bbc.co.uk...rammes/b00bv14q

No page for 'Flying Scot' though.

'The Quiet Champion' is also currently available on iPlayer. Just search for Jim Clark.

Eric Dymock's book on Jim referred to Kate Eccles as "the second woman in Jim's life" after Sally Stokes departed.

There's a nice photo on Motor Sport's Twitter feed showing Jim eating an ice cream at Monza 1967 accompanied by a woman who one of the commenters identifies as Kate Eccles:

Is she the same Kate (Kathryn Mary) Eccles who married Lord Vestey in 1970?

I went to the preview of the programme.....JYS came on at the start to give us an introduction....within a couple of minutes he had broken down and was in tears.......some things never heal.

Jim looks quite amused but she doesn't look too happy. Maybe the Clark budget* didn't stretch to an ice-cream each?

(* loath as I am to perpetuate the grippit Scotsman myth...)

I watched for the 2nd time, and enjoyed again, but missed the last ten minutes as it is so very sad. I did look at the end at the credits though, to see who had that gentle touch on the guitar, I thought the music was very fitting and I would like to know who was playing it.

Nick Drake springs to mind, although I'm maybe getting confused with 'The Killer Years' documentary.

I think all the music for 'The Quiet Champion' was specially commissioned.

That Monza shot is in the LAT book on JC and also in Tulloch's book. I always think it is such a meaningful and atmospheric shot. After practice where the man had put it on pole on a legendary track, A fluffed start meant he had it all to do, then a puncture, blitzing through the  field shattering the lap record several times, dropping  to finish 3rd having run out of  fuel in the last corner.  The shot shows such a classic halcyon time. JC, who at that time was Master of the Universe,  so relaxed with Kate Eccles, loyal mechanics close by in an informal pose, JC's close friend  Jabby Crombac in a world of his own, with a fan capturing it all on film for his own records. The fact that Kate was such a stunningly beautiful young woman is a bonus..... but it just sets a mark for such a wonderful period in time, sadly to end for all of us a few months later. It just reaffirms for me why I love that whole period so much.

Re the ice cream, I prefer to think of it as Jim offering Kate his ice cream, the sort of thing he would do, certainly since he clearly cared for her, I suspect, rather than reflecting the comment above.

Funny. I think the small grin of Jim Clark and the hands on the hips of the girl gives me this caption. Kate: 'Hang on. You said you only wanted a little bite!'

On BBC4 at 10pm tonight. Maybe available on the red button catch up device later. It may also be repeated again shortly as is often the case.
