I know its a very long shot but does anyone have any details of any Croft Race meetings late April - May 1966 ?

The reason I'm asking....I was 12 at the time and was taken there by Dad on a Sunday of an exeat weekend [weekends at home] from boarding school.....we had 3 exeats each term time and this would be either the 1st or 2nd exeat during the summer term of my 1st year.

I have a feeling it was shortly after May 18th [the date my grandfather died] but could be wrong.  It don't think it was as late as the Spring Bank Holiday or June.

That was my very 1st visit to the circuit.....all I remember is a black 2 -seater sports racer / prototype lapping very quickly out on its own. Seemed to me to be in several races...no idea who that was or the car

I suppose I could try & buy old Autosports and Motoring News from that time and investigate myself....but being on TNF, I thought I'd ask....

Thanks in advance

I have the Autosports with reports of the 27 March and 8 May meetings but I am not sure what I can tell you that would help you identify the meeting that you attended. At the meeting on the 27th Eric Liddell won a couple of race in a Ford GT40 but I don't think his car was black. In fact black would have been a fairly unusual choice of colour.

It would be the May 8th meeting.....the date sounds about right and it was after the Easter Hols.

I realised after I'd posted that it probably couldn't have been after May 18th as that would bring it close to, if not on, the Spring Bank Hol weekend.

Many Thanks RAP & Pete53.

Apparently the weather that day was "Wet and Windy" and further described as "cold, dreary, rainy"  ..ring any bells?

I can't remember what the weather was like....the chances are that even if it was a raging storm, I'd be stood on the banking watching the racing :drunk:

I do remember Dad being asleep in our car though, but he did have a lot on his mind at the time ):

At Race Retro this weekend, I saw & bought a copy of Autosport which covered the May 8th meeting......the car I remember was probably Tony Dean's Brabham BT8 which competed in 2 races that day, winning both. Especially as 1 of the races was a handicap, with Willy Green's Mini finishing 2nd......So, now I know both when the meeting was and the driver / car I remember....
