... I'm sure Redbull will properly "cooperate" with the EU Anti-Competition Commission....

"...oh, sorry those important documents you wanted to inspect were stolen in that very public robbery we had. did you see that? the robbery? it was everywhere. all over the news, it was. yeah, so sorry. erm... cup ot tea?"

I know this is infantile, but when I heard the news about the heist, I couldn't help thinking "what goes around, comes around"  :p

I'm confused. What did go around?

- Was anyone injured? Nope.

- Did anyone get killed? Nope.

- Are there way bigger tragedies in F1, like hundreds of people losing their job lately? Yes.

I wonder how you may react if it happened to your favourite team/ driver? I'm a tifoso, and i have not been here in weeks, but this news was properly awful. Just because there are other issues, one mustn't overlook this. You have no idea how much work went into starting an organisation, getting it going and becoming successful, and your words show as much. Note, i mean no disrespect, merely wishing that you wouldn't belittle what it means to RBR. I'm a tifoso.

I hope them chaps get caught and are guests of the respective governments for a while

That shirt worn by Vettel on that day is truly miserable.

Tee, hee... he always looked upto Schumacher and is merely continuing the old tradition of being so successful, but dressing oh so shockingly. :p

What I'm struggling with here, is that most of whatever was stolen were one offs or replicas of one offs, so how much use would they be to anyone? They'd be pretty easy to track down, unless they are literally going into someone's personal collection (which nobody except that person and his closest few would ever encounter...)

My thoughts too (obviously joking).

The timing was just curious especially as Seb likes accumulating records and mementos. Maybe Newey told him 'no' and he decided to act :stoned:

In all seriousness this is disgusting and a real shame for everyone at Red Bull :|

I would think they will have the trophies rebuilt - who has the originals anyway - the drivers? (Webber, Vettel, Ricciardo)

The act in itself is absolutely dispicable and I wonder, if it is an inside job, who would have the motives to do it? Is it revenge? Envy? Is it sheer destructivity? Is it humiliation they are after? Or is it simply the theft of silver?

10th anniversary? How high are the insurance sums?

Who could be behind it? Ron Dennis? Seb Vettel? Dietrich Mateschitz? Adrian Newey? Dr.Helmut Marko? Christian Horner? The Russian mafia?

No, security would certainly not be armed- not with a gun, baton, or even a tin opener. I can't imagine there would be enough security on duty either to tackle two cars of ram raiders.

I wonder how those security guards explained themselves....

or England, why does it have to be one of the "other " countries?

England has a certain tradition in these things, doesn't it?

Wasn't Bernie said to have be involved in the Great Train Robbery?

Marko said drivers keep the driver trophies (and presumably the team makes copies). Presumably also the team keeps the team trophies (the ones they get when they win a race)

Marko also said he thought it was about the silver, though dunno ... I would assume they don't make solid silver copies, I would assume some sort of plating would be involved to keep costs down so I don't really see how/how much silver the thieves would get out of them.

Or knew one of them, yes.

In any case, the Great Train Robbery was small fry compared to the 100 year deal that Mosley and Bernie did with the commercial rights.

Roy James the getaway driver was a racing driver and silversmith, when he was released he ended up making trophies including I believe the one for F1 promoters. He would have known Ecclestone from racing.

Apologies for the poor quality of the source, our local paper, however having seen the police divers on site yesterday I'm confident that this is reliable.

Probably when they discovered that most of the trophies were replicas and/or made of plastic and steel so no scrap value in them.

I'm wondering how they knew that the trophies were in the lake. Hopefully they were seen being dumped and the police have a new lead to catch those responsible.

There is good road access to a very small portion of the lake.  The area in question is the location of a small watersports centre, which has a couple of jetties and a boating ramp.  My guess would be these guys were in a hurry and dumped them in the shallow water near the edge of the lake, either using the ramp or from the jetty. In either case, the water is quite shallow here. I expect that one of the many dog walkers saw something amiss in the water on Monday morning, it was a clear day.

I am of the opinion that these guys are not local, as we have around 40 lakes in Yateley, and this is the last one I'd choose to hide anything in! It is busy, open and has a couple of commercial buildings which brings the danger of CCTV.  In addition, it's right next door to a busy wedding venue that is frequented very late into the night all year round

For anyone interested, here's a google maps link to the lake area:

I think they were spotted by a dog walker so that suggests to me they were probably in the shallow part. They won't get any DNA evidence off them so I think the thieves will put this down as a rather poorly planned botched robbery lol.

Police think one of the cars was used in two other robberies in the weeks prior so it does look to be an opportunistic attack rather than something more sinister. Perhaps someone saw the trophies on the news and thought they were worth more than they actually are.

I can understand being dumb and not thinking the trophies are worth smth, but how can six men collectively this day and age be this dumb!?

I can also understand dumping the throphies in the lake to cover up fingermarks etc. But he threw down the trophy like its garbage. He must know a trophy has great symbolic meaning, F1 or not. Such utter disrespect is just uncomprehensible.

Seems like I was extremely lucky last Sunday (30th Nov.) when me and my buddy arrived at Red Bull, just to have a small look on the building. We were quite surprised to see that there was nothing hindering us getting close to the building, which was a positive surprise seeing how locked down Merc. and Force India was. Even more surprised when we didn't even get to the stage of getting close to the building before someone came out - we were expecting to get a serious question about what we were doing. Instead the man just smiled and invited us inside for a little chat.

I really hope RB keeps it this way in the future as well.

1. good stuff

2. why steal cheaply made trophies, they are only of sentimental value!!???

Christian Horner said that 'the break-in (...) was very upsetting for our night officers who were on duty at the time'.

What did these people do? You don't steal 60 large trophies in a matter of seconds. Is such security not armed in the United Kingdom?

In any case, an unfortunate turn of events for the Red Bull team.

Good to hear - I hope we get an update on what happened to the unrecovered trophies, and whether they can now be found.  If they were sold on the people who bought them should be charged.

a closure on this saga ...

Red Bull trophy thieves sentenced to jail

Four members of a gang which stole trophies from the Red Bull base in Milton Keynes have been jailed.

A total of 60 trophies were recorded to have been stolen in the burglary, which took place last December, after the gang drove a vehicle through the front doors of the factory, causing extensive damage in the process.

Around 20 of the trophies were recovered from Horseshoe Lake near Sandhurst around 10 days later.

After pleading guilty to conspiracy charges during a previous trial at Guildford Crown Court, the four men, aged between 24 and 41, were given jail sentences ranging from two to seven years.

More details here.

These are the same gang that ripped an ATM out of Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands.  And some live in Yateley which explains why they chose a local lake to dump some of the trophies.
