The Uraidla SA street machine and Hot Rod party is always a good show. The weather was a bit average early but it fined up by lunch. Numbers were down. probably about 500 cars instead of near double that coming and going during the day.

Again I went a bit mad taking pics.

Galaxies come with 4 doors and two,, but only in blue.

The bottom pic is the mayors car,, yes for real. Blown 350 Chev power. His other car is a 340 Challenger!

Engines; EH engine, modern

EH engine traditional

Mopar. NO. That is a 409 Chev.

Offy equipped side valve

Cortina engine, interchanges with Zephyr.

428 where it only just fits. Note the valve cover spacers. Something extra is hiding there.

Woof!

Mike Davidsons Lakester, turbos and efi and modern ignition etc etc all by 2. All on sidevalves. I dont know how fast it is but after the cackle of an Offy headed sidevalve with 97s in the heavy stockcars I am used to it sounds flat

This has some of the characteristics of the '39 / '40 Ford's.

Thanks for sharing

I think you're right, either a 1940 or 1941 Lincoln Zephyr. Hopefully it was a basket case, because they are too pretty to chop up otherwise.

It could also be a Continental...

...but the alterations are so wild you'd never tell between those years or those models without checking to see whether it's a V8 or V12.

I feel I have seen this car in a magazine [at the newsagent] and The Lincoln could be right.

I don't think it's a Continental. Among the Zephyr offerings was a sleek two-passenger coupe, while the Continental was always a much more upright bustle-backed car.

The Lincoln custom is based on a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr coupe. As I understand it this car is built using a body kit supplied by a US based firm "Deco Rides" . http://www.decorides...tbackzephyr.htm

This particular car runs a GM LS1 motor and turbo 700 trans.

So,no original tin was hurt or maimed during the course of this production!

Thanks.

Was this car featured in a magazine? It looks familiar from my browsing at the newsagents.

While not me it is very much a headturner. The pink Mopar behind looks oh so sedate!

Lee as to the Lincoln Zephyr coupe , I believe it was featured in a local magazine Street Machine I think.

As to this engine , this is not a Mopar. This is what is called a W series big block Chev. Alternatively, the first big block Chev that dates back to

1958 . Produced in 348;409 and apparently some 427 ci versions. Same as the engine in Norm Beechey's Impala he raced back in the 60's .

Yes, I don't think there'd be much dress-up gear out there for the Mopar Poly versions of the Hemis...

They did look a bit like that though.

Oops I do know that. I looked at a 409 a few weeks ago so have no excuse. Though some Mopars did look similar, I forget which one.

It's the same with the V8 Fords...

They have four plugs and three exhausts. Ports are siamesed for the cylinders not on the ends.

I'm assuming here that you realise it's a Lincoln Zephyr V12 engine.

Reputedly the V12 was plagued with overheating problems. The siamesed exhausts are probably part of that. Though they do seem to be a very smooth engine. The engine unshrouded as such probably will help resolve the issues. Basic engine design is similar to the V8 but not the same.

A bit different though as a rod engine. The car had the usual quick change centre in the diff too. Wires all round and some very skinny tyres.

It seems to be a Lincoln day with this car and the radical coupe.

The many Ford V8 Specials running in the 1948 Australian Grand Prix had similar overheating problems...

As did the Ford V8s running at Lobethal in 1940, apparently another very hot day. At that one Doug Whiteford's Black Bess is reputed to have melted its aftermarket alloy heads.

Mopars

One of about 10000 General Lee clones. Nice car though.

Plymouth Sattelite Hemi

I am confused, what is it! Besides a Mopar with fins. Too many variations with Dodge Desoto Plymouth. It is rumored they built 2 the same. They had 6s, they had sawtooths [polys], they had Hemis and about half a dozen others!

Dodge Phonebox, base model? It has Valiant hubcaps meaning small brakes. Again, expert opinion. A very nice VC Valiant in the background. With the same hubcaps, and 4" PCD.

Phonebox  convertible in orange.. The T Bird behind was lovely.

Dodge Coronet in 2 tone pink!

Plymouth Fury convertible. A car that looks great with the top down, or in a coupe!

DSCF0786.jpgHOLDENS.

EH Special with the classic period mods, 13x6  torana centred rims, instruments, 2" exhaust on the ultimate 179 manual!

Modified EH Holden. Those wheels are different!

Torana LH SLR5000 with L34 flares and spoilers.

HK Premier. The no plate says it all!

HQ Coupe. With the period mods, eg Statesaman nosecone, GTS guards. Very clean and straight.

FC Holden special.

HQ Kingswood. Standard car except the alloy wheels. Of which I supplied. 40 years of hindsight and they still look sleek.DSCF0808.jpgDSCF0756.jpgDSCF0802.jpgDSCF0761.jpgDSCF0763.jpgDSCF0807.jpg

DSCF0780.jpgDifferent. The cars that dont quite fit into a 'box'

Zephyr Mk11. Nice car with just a few mods. 14" Falcon wheels and trim bands and a few other dress up bits. To me the nicest Zephyr to look at.

My worst pic of the day. A early PA Vauxhall Cresta. Owned by a blondie Rock and roller.

Studebaker Gran tourismo. Always pretty and different.

Homegrown? Pontiac Convertible. Though it seems it was a 2 door. Plus a 660 Rambler wagon.Fairly rare always.

Barge or Tank Fairlane. I love the AT tyres. Ready for the next demo derby which those things were so succesfull at!

Mercury Cougar. The Mustang with class!

Edsel convertible. A relative of the barge.

69 Mustang notchback. The Mustang you can fit the esky and chairs in the boot,, just. Unlike the fastback!

Early Plymouth ? Valiant 2 door. Complete with all alloy slant 6.

Compact Fairlane 2 door, LHD. And an Aussie AP5 Valiant Regal in the background.

Shelby Mustang, probably a clone. Great car though.

Lee, could you please edit your posts to put the captions with the pics?

It is impossible to follow them otherwise.

The white convertible would be a Fury, of course.

And the Phoenixes did have small brakes, 10 x 2.5 at the front.

The photos are really good and very welcome. But as they are not really cars i have much experience with (although I do recall seeing Oz Fords in dealers in the UK in the late 60s, ear;y 70s)  I need help getting to know them. So i  too would find it very helpful if the captions could be with the relevant photo.

Thanks for taking the trouble to post all these. I could not manage to post even one.......  The updates beat me.

That is why I put the captions there. Not THAT hard, the captions are in order of picture.

As I said Post Image defeats my efforts to do anything except as I do. I would prefer the captions on the bottom but I cannot get a cursor. And too hard and time consuming trying to do every individual pic.

Besides that Post Image is quite user friendly and I recomend it too all. And the pics dont seem to disapear after a few months either.

This is a 1957 Chrysler Windsor. This was the first year for quad headlights in the US, but some states hadn't made them legal yet so some were sold as you see it here.

The featured car in your second Cadillac photo is actually a Lincoln Continental Mark V.

I love seeing these photos, especially the Australian cars, of which I know so little. I'm really surprised that there are so many American cars there.

I knew the Lincoln was a Lincoln, Doooh getting silly in my old age.

With the Chrysler I had a feeling it was something like that.

I never knew about the headlight situation.

There is literally thousands of US cars here in SA alone. Last weeks Zipple cruise  had aprox 500 cars out. US models, Hotrods and Harleys.

Google    zipsautogallery.net which should find hundreds of pics or just Google Zipple Cruise, that alone should find it.

He owns the beige Chev fastback near the top.

Quite a few of our US cars were Aussie assembled inc my Blue 71 Galaxie at the top. Built CKD sourced from Canada. Aussie glazed, trimmed and little else. Chevs, Pontis etc too were made the same way. Ramblers were built here by AMC who also did Triumphs and Toyotas in that period. A few Mustangs too were Oz assembled in 66.

Some of the 'factory' conversions were not really clever which at times let the cars down badly.

Though there is lots of imports too, mostly from the US but some too from other markets too, eg South africa, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan. The Asian imports are generally late 70s to early 90s.

Because of being involved in the US Scene I dont see as many Aussie Classics to take pics of. I suppose I could walk out of the office and take some pics!  A couple of Toranas, a 78 Fairmont and a 75 Holden. All need new homes!

In the background of my pics you can see a few  Aussie cars, some US derived like the Valiants, Dodges [assembled here] early Falcons plus the Rambler and others. Plus a few English derived too like Cortinas, Morrises etc.

The Uraidla event is open to all.

There was a big beetle there for a short period, a late 70s Porker sounding quite racey when it left.

I've not tried Postimage, so don't know its little foibles. One thing I have found useful when trying to muck around with posts, adding captions etc, is to toggle the little 'lightswitch' icon in the top left of the reply box. This turns the WYSIWYG format into a much more basic format that's much easier to play around with - no problems getting the cursor exactly where you want it.

I have permanently got the 'lightswitch' on... or off, as the case may be, anyway I clicked on it once and it's all fixed...

I use Post Image all the time now and have no trouble putting text wherever I want.

Love this; such a contrast to the rather stuffy and strait laced UK approach of beardy blokes in a field with some horror like a Marina or HA Viva. See some machinery  like this at my local dragstrip - love the rat rod look especially - but I seem twice the age of anybody else there. Do I sense many TNF folk regard this as beyond the  pale?

Had I been in the neighbourhood I would have very happily passed my day amongst these marvels. I have a soft spot for US cars. I figure that if they can produce a car that will survive a NYC winter or an Arizona summer they must be doing something right. Perhaps that is what made them popular in Oz too. The following is slightly off topic but shows they are (or were!) tough too.

Many years ago, in my yoof (as they now say in modern English in the UK) I had a financial interest in a taxi company (forgive me Lee!). I used to drivr weekends as I could make what was, to me, a good amount of dosh in a relatively short period. Anyway one night my Ford Zodiac Mk3 had the master cylinder fail. I had no seals or a spare so was off the road. My partner happened to have an older Nash Rambler parked outside the office. I "borrowed" that for the rest of the night.  It was odd for passengers as it was LHD! Lots of young ladies suddenly wanted to sit on my lap when they got in.....

Anyway dead early on the Sunday morning, near the massive Ford factory in Dagenham, I was making my way back to the office following two Mk1 Cortinas, probably on their way to work a shift at Fords.  Cortina No1 driver saw a mate and slammed on to pick him up. Cortina no2 just pulled up in time. I did not and bashed into No 2 and sent him into No1. Quite a bit of damage was done to both. "my" Yank tank was....untouched.  Amazing.

The next part of the saga is incredible. I was just getting out to face the consequences when my partner pulls up and gets out his car. He is ranting and raving about Cortina

No 1s dangerous driving. He had witnessed the whole accident he said and would report this dangerous behaviour to the police. He feigned not to know me at all. I recall being dumbstruck by his performance. He played his part well and the two Cortina drivers, who seemingly knew each other, decided they could sort their damage out and asked if we could leave it at that.  And then bu@@ered off, leaving me and my partner to stand there in amazement. The Yank tank motored on for ages afterwards.

There was a HB Viva around, fitted with a 350 Chev and reputedly a lot of stregthening! No Marinas to my knowledge!

Maybe Top Gear has dropped pianos on all of them!

These events actually have a range of cars, there was a few more I would have taken but either they left before I got to them or too many people in the way. There was really nice Mk2 Cortina with some serious mods, quite a few more Holdens, Falcons and Valiants. Even a VW beetle [Greg!]

Since my interests are more US stuff  I photographed them in preference.

I am fairly sure a few were also in the Palmer Rod Run thread a few weeks ago.

The Classic Car scene here is quite active, this time of year their is events every weekend, I often see cars going the opposite direction when I am going to an event. because of the weather I saw cars going home before I even arrived! There was a Cruise to Uraidla that some probably went on.

On the way I got tangled up with a pile of Mazda rotaries and a field of EH HD HR Holdens too so obviously there was events for them somewhere too.

A few years ago I turned up at Uraidla on my way  home from a Classic Speedway event. The Supermodified caused some interest then I proceeded home after a quick look around. My modern towcar was not appreciated though!

I once turned up to the GM day with my Torana Sports Sedan being towed by my Ford Galaxie!  That too created some interest, both positive and negative. Possibly more than the Torana actually.
