The Autosport awards are tonight. These are the nominees:

http://awards.autosp.../2014-nominees/

Too late to make your vote count now, of course but you can do the next best thing - vote in as many questions here as the Autosport bulletin board software would allow (three) and also use this space to discuss the results as they come in.

Autosport are also doing live updates so presumably the live forum might be open? Hope so. See you there from 9.30 PM GMT if so!

Astonishingly, no. Just goes to show the state of the Royal Mail these days. Terrible to have so carelessly lost what I expect was a VIP ticket.

I'd vote, but I don't follow rallying.

Would definitely go with Ricciardo as Driver of the Year.

And Max Verstappen as Rookie of the Year.

Zero doubt about these choices, too.

Am surprised this "Esteban Ocon" doesn't get much more recognition. I honestly think he's one to watch (only a year or rather months older than Verstappen) for some reason the hype just never really happened for him.

Maybe that's because he got his ass handed to him in a couple of direct duels with Max. ;)

Ocon's definitely one to watch.

But it was also his 3rd year racing cars and was in the team that had won the championship the previous two years in a row.

What Max did was a fair bit more impressive if you ask me.

Why is Bottas up for this and Alonso not. Bottas's qualifying was superb this year, but his race day performances were nothing special.

8-7 to Massa when both finished

10-9  to Bottas overall

Massa lost a lot of points due to being taken out at the start of races as well.

I voted for Lewis, but I do not mind if D.R gets the nod.

Visibility. 6 podiums. Looked 'racey' because of his driving style (overdriving).

He has got to nail in next year or myth well and truly busted.

Anyways
Is Lewis actually there? Seb's speeches were always fun, I know Lewis isn't super charismatic, but an appearance would be nice.

Obviously Ocon is much better than Verstappen, but for me a rookie of the year is Larson. Got screwed by The Chase.

22:16 Host Steve Rider implores Hamilton to remain on stage for the next award as hip-hop star Tinie Tempah comes on stage to present the International Racing Driver of the Year award.

22:15 The nominees for the International Racing Driver of the Year award are:

Didn't know Jenson Button's dad was the one who provided an engine for Lewis during his karting days

Interesting

Alonso's race performances weren't always that special either. After his brilliant Hungary perfomance he had just one single other remarkable performance (in SIngapore) but in a lot of races in the second part of the year (e.g. Spa) he was either not that special or just overdriving his car.

Meanwhile Bottas was considered as the best driver of the weekend in three consecutive races (Austria, Britain, Germany) in the Voting threads in the Bets&Games forum - where he finished ahead of Alonso http://forums.autosp...inal-standings/

Rosberg also finished ahead of Alonso according to that.  Alonso could only get drive within the limits of his car, and he did very well all things considered.

Kimi could rarely get near him in qualifying or race trim. Bottas was given the machinery to dazzle, Alonso and Button were not. Alonso was much more consistent.

Anyway, well done Lewis

Faith in the AS awards restored after the 2012 awards fiasco.

Vettel getting International driver when Alonso was on a mission. RB10 getting best car when I think there were plenty of better alternatives like the MP4-27 which only fell down because of the team that operated it, as well as cars from other categories. Button getting British Driver when he was outscored by teammate Hamilton despite Hamilton having significantly more bad luck. I honestly felt sick.

However, I think this years awards were much better. Although the non-LH fanboy which is concealed in my middle left toenail says maybe Danny Ric could have been international drive but even then I think Hamilton is undoubtedly a worthy recipient.

I will probably get banned for this

But I have never really cared about the AS awards. Therefore, I have never got upset over it. I have disagreed with the choices some years, but I don't think it is worth getting annoyed about.

Oh. Oh well. Please grab an Autosport celebratory profiterole and then post it to me.

Also:

"23:04 Horner expresses his frustration at the theft of so many hard-earned trophies from the Red Bull factory - though he retains a sense of humour about it, joking both that "the only ones they left behind were the AUTOSPORT Awards" and that the thief was probably Sebastian Vettel..."

Not much different to this year with ricciardo on a mission.

I think both Vettel & Lewis deserved it though, despite both having dominant cars & ordinary team mates, they got the jobs done in fine fashion despite the pressure involved.

W05 definitely deserved the Racing Car of the Year award, but I'm still waiting for the next time a non-F1 car wins the award for the first time since the Bentley Speed 8 in '03.  :(

Then I guess we have to wait until the top 3 F1 constructors finish within 90% of each other in the standings again.

Did you watch the races?

He didn't beat Max comfortably, he won because a) he has more experience, b) he drove for the best F3 team and c) because Max made some rookie mistakes and had more reliability issues. In fact, like I said earlier, Max beat Ocon in almost all of the head to head fights they had.

There's a reason Max got an F1 race seat after half a year of single seater racing and Ocon hasn't yet after 3 years.

2012: Ocon's rookie single seater season: 24 races, 0 wins, 3 podiums, 0 pole posiions, 1 fastest race lap

2014: Verstappen's rookie single seater season: 46 races, 13 wins, 22 podiums, 11 pole positions, 12 fastst race laps

A3 pointed out most of what needed to be said. But Rosberg also beat Ricciardo this year in the standings by a fairly large margin. Would you say Rosberg was the far more impressive driver? Or more impressive at all?

Sometimes you need to look at more than just a Wikipedia page to understand the circumstances behind everything and how it all played out. Just like in F1.

To be fair, you cant blame Kimi for that. The architect should have made it so people could get a better feel for the front of the place.

He had 2 or 3 weekends where he was quicker on merit on race day. He's not on the same level as lewis.

Ordinary was probably a bit harsh, but i would put him with webber in a the group that is capable of race wins, but needs a weak team mate & dominant car for a WDC.
