In Saint Exupery's "The Little Prince" there a quote that I think applies here:

Quote

"if I ordered a general to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not obey me, that would not be the fault of the general. It would be my fault."

They weren't too nice. They were too wise.   ;)

I had hope that the belief, prevalent in football and various other sports, that asking somebody to honour his contract is akin to some impossible command, had not yet gained widespread acceptance in F1. Nobody makes people sign contracts.

That's not to say I don't think there can be a mutual parting of ways before a contract ends, nor to suggest that there was any desperate need to keep Alonso on board from Ferrari's perspective. As I've said before, I don't really think it matters much who drives the car at this stage of Ferrari's recovery, as the standard of work that has been done at the factory, particularly on the power unit, has been such that there is nothing the drivers or the race team can do, and that is likely to continue to be the case in the short term. However, even if you regard Vettel as a like-for-like replacement for Alonso, which is a bit of a reach in my view, it doesn't look particularly good that the driver making way is the one who scored 161 points, while the fellow who scored 55 points is retained. It's more about the message that sends than anything else.
