To be fair though, is this year going to be different to any other in terms of launch importance? Will the teams doing a proper launch really show off the new nose and stuff like that?

I'm just being grumpy as I like skiving off work to watch the launches - and it builds up the week to testing. Also anything launched on the 1st in Jerez I won't get to see until the following day as I will be travelling all of Sunday. I was kind of hoping with Merc being reigning champions they might be one of the few to have a proper launch but unfortunately its not to be.

Force India just tweeted a photographer snapping shots of the new car. If you squint the car is visible in the guys glasses, maybe, in the right lens. The front wheel and the cockpit area, maybe kind of.

Quit joking guys. Is serious business. The New Force should take the WCC. It's over a week faster than the competition!
Or not - it seems they are running late with the new car and it won't make its debut until Barcelona test
From the testing thread:
Tobias Grüner F1 @tgruener
#F1 Force India VJM08 only new car not running at Jerez. Check out latest infos about launch season -> AMuS (German): ams.to/Ys
Pretty much confirms it is just a livery launch and not the new car we will see in Mexico I guess.
edit: Amus also have the lauch date of Red Bull as the 1st Feb and Williams as either the 31st Jan or 1st of Feb (so not this Thursday as had been previously posted in this thread)

Correspondent Michael Schmidt said that for "strategic reasons", Force India will instead test a 2014 car at Jerez.
"The team has changed wind tunnels," the respected journalist wrote, "from its own facility in Brackley to the Toyota (tunnel) in Cologne.
"(In Cologne,) engineers under technical director Andy Green have found new insights into the aerodynamic problems of the past," Schmidt claimed.

Autosport article has quotes and it seems this was a deliberate choice rather than being late. Would go part of the way to explaining why they'd have a livery launch early on as well. Gets them 2 shots at the PR pie, and both times they're separated from everyone else (who look like they'll all be clustered around the days leading up to the first test).
Could be smart, could be stupid, could just be smokescreen and they really are running late. Either way, they'll get good PR mileage .

Andrew Green's explanation:
"There is an argument to say you are much better off using those three weeks to move the car along as far as development is concerned, and then rolling out at Barcelona," Green told Autosport. "There are advantages and disadvantages to both. It's not clear-cut like it was [in 2014]. [Last year] you had to do the first test with the new power unit and the new chassis; you just had to get miles on the car. It's not that critical [this season]."
Green also thinks the team will benefit from delaying the introduction of its new challenger as it assesses the lessons learned at the end of last season.
"It means the things we tested and learned about at the last races and in the [Abu Dhabi] test could actually get on the car for the start of next year, rather than it missing the boat and ending up on as an upgrade. Or even not on an upgrade, because if you don't have the latitude to design those parts in, you box yourself in and they never go on. The later you can leave it, the better."
"In the last few weeks [of 2014], we were on quite a steep learning curve, which makes you think you should hold back. It would be a much harder decision if the tyres were going to be proper 2015 race tyres at Jerez, but because they're not it is a bit of a shakedown test."
I think it's a nice way of saying they're behind do, no way around it, and sadly a lot of people that know of the team saw this coming. Too easy too call for a disaster but I wouldn't blame you for predicting one

Why not? I mean aren't 2015-spec race tyres supplied to teams during pre-season tests?

Due to low temperatures and an abrasive surface, Pirelli will run a compound normally not used.
The normal tyres cannot cope with these conditions.

They called it a 'driver event'.
Well that's disappointing. Red Bull have been very quiet so far about the new car (along with Sauber) there has been no info whatsoever yet. At least Sauber have confirmed their driver line-up for Jerez.

Red Bull opts for late car build ahead of 2015 F1 testing - http://www.autosport...t.php/id/117475
With the first pre-season test kicking off at Jerez in Spain on Sunday, Red Bull's new Renault-powered challenger has only just begun construction at its Milton Keynes base.
That move comes after design chiefs were given the green light to maximise development time on the car to ensure the team did not let any opportunity go to waste in its bid to topple Mercedes.
Team principal Christian Horner said during a Red Bull media event in Milton Keynes on Tuesday that, although there was no danger of missing the first test, things were still pretty fraught at the factory to get the car finished and shipped to Spain.
(I would put this in the Red Bull RB11 thread - but there isn't one )
