Lotus really was one of Fernando Alonso's options for the 2015 season, team owner Gerard Lopez has admitted.

"It was a real option," Lopez confirmed to Spain's El Mundo newspaper. "We opened the door to Fernando, but it was clear that he had his objectives."

Instead, Alonso has gone back to his old 2007 team, McLaren, where despite rumours of exit clauses he openly admits he is unlikely to be a winning force from "day one".

Asked if he thinks Alonso can win his long-awaited third title in Woking grey, Lopez answered: "I hope so.

"He is a driver who deserves to win at least one more championship. We'll see if McLaren can do what it needs to do.

"Everything takes time. It's an adventure, we'll see what happens," Lopez added.

Oh no that can't be true, can it? I mean all the guys around here said Fred could never go back anywhere because he's (_______), so to hear this on the heels of a McLaren signing is just unreal... I though the guys here knew everything, but I guess not.

See, this is the problem with reputations. Lotus probably thought that ALO brings 6 tenths of a billion.

well, by that logic it was genuine option for him to be my personal driver. i wanted him to be my personal driver, my door was open for him, so therefore it was a genuine option, right?

That 6 tenths just won't go away, which is a good thing because he's now taken it back to McLaren, who really need it.... wait, that means Ferrari will be another 6 tenths behind next year, schitt they are toast.

I'm picturing* Lopez leaning in the doorway, showing a bit of thigh, and chirping Fernandooooooo and him shuffling on.

*And now you are too.

Its a bit like when Ayton Senna was an option for Eddie Jordan in the early 90s. Senna listened politely as Jordan did the sales pitch, giving him the sidepods to fill with any sponsor he wanted, but in the end Senna had to decline his offer.

Au contraire - Fred would have attracted enough sponsorship to keep Romain   ;)

Will Lotus reach the point were they don't need Maldonado soon? They must hate themselves for having to put him on the grid.

OMG, really? They were willing to sign the best driver on the grid who also would attract some serious sponsors? :o

No, they're far more likely to lose his money in the short term.

Wow, judging by the comments here hindsight is definitely 20/20. Go back to the where will Alonso be in 2015 thread and it's littered with "Alonso has painted himself into a corner", "forced sabbatical", "nowhere but McLaren to go" but now it's obvious he had options? Give me a break...
