Honda will surely get one of the other Honda rider's to sacrifice his handlebar for Barreda?

I don't think it will be that easy...the break looked to be in triple clamp (a die cast unit)a lot of work if the navigation equipment has to be removed. My initial thought was to insert a tube inside both the triple clamp and the handlebar and use metal bonding glue to hold it all together maybe reinforced by bolts through the handlebar to locate it...

Barreda already lost 1:37 currently 10th.
Coma leads Goncalves by almost 10 minutes
Van Niekerk also seems to have disappeared.

Joan Barreda is being towed by Jeremias Israel Esquerre and has completed the first section of the day's special a long way behind. The Honda rider appears to be losing the Dakar!

Quintanilla wins and is now only 2 minutes behind Goncalves who is 9 minutes behind Coma.

A British Eurosport commentator who is usually the commentator for their Dakar program ( also does cycling reporting ).
I like him as a commentator, his voice has a fatherly tone to it
Carlton Kirby is brilliant .

Oh no, now Quintanilla is in big trouble. Price up to 3rd, impressive.
#115
Posted 13 January 2015 - 13:25
Goncalves is flying (with Isreal on course) and has taken 3 minutes out of Coma, lead now under 6 minutes
#116
Posted 13 January 2015 - 15:28
Price also gone by the look of things and Duclos has stopped, they are falling like flies

Phew, Price and Quintanilla appear on the timing at the finish, probably a bug.

After having ridden 120 km with a broken handlebar yesterday, Joan Barreda was not able to call on his assistance team to replace it, due to the rules of the marathon stage. The Spaniard therefore had to count on the solidarity of Argentinean Honda rider Demian Guiral who gave him his handlebars. In exchange Guiral received Barreda's patched up handlebar and tried to strengthen it, without the guarantee that the repairs will last out the day.

Having seen more close-ups of the damage today...I change my opinion...the handle bars seem to be attached in the normal way (4 bolts into the triple clamp)

No, the car was lucky to make the start, this event is a big test for them really. The goal is just rack up racing miles.

If today's live timing is to be believed (It wasn't yesterday), Quintanilla and Goncalves are gone and the top 5 are KTMs with Price 2nd half an hour behind Coma and Casale has caught Sonik in the quads.

At the end of the stage Goncalves and Quintanilla are there in 2nd and 3rd.
Price is 4th by less than 30 seconds, brilliant.

Today pretty much ended any competition for the victory apart from trucks. It's all about the reliability now.
#131
Posted 15 January 2015 - 00:48
I think in the bikes the gap is still reasonably small for the victory to be disputed beyond reliability issues (7 min between Gonçalves and Coma I believe).
As for Peugeot being lucky to make it to the "grid" and basically using this year's edition as a test, I can understand it, but on the other hand, from a PR perspective, it seems a bit too risky. Surely they didn't have much choice, but I would assume the kind of thrashing they're having is probably hurting the brand.

Goncalves has taken 2 minutes out of Coma already, lead down to 5 minutes

Another spectacular turn of events on the Dakar! Author so far of a superb third place in the general standings on his first Dakar, Yazeed Alrajhi has had mechanical problems with his Toyota and is said to have decided to drop out of the race just several kilometres from the start of the day's special.

Just ruins the race for the lead, doesn't change any positions, Al Attiyah is still winning stages and looks like the Nikolaev charge has stopped so barring mechanicals I think we have the final results at the front

Congrats to the winners and finishers! Kamaz and Coma did it again, as expected, but huge respect to them. Al Attiyah was very impressive this year, making far less mistakes then usual. Wish someone had given him a harder time though. A bit dissapointed by the Peugeots, by let's hope they are stronger next year.
