It was one of those good-natured arguments in the pub .... which, so far, has been the UK's most powerful F1 engine of all time ?

I'm probably wrong, but I opted for Cosworth's turbocharged 1.5-litre vee-6 of 1987, which seems to have raced in Benettons with a reliable near-1,000bhp.

Now shoot me down or let's, at least, have some reasoned alternatives.

I have a friend who worked for Cosworth at the time, and he once told me that in 1987 Benetton were indeed using engines with around 1,000 bhp in race trim. I'd be surprised if anything else British came close to that - my understanding is that the Hart 415T didn't produce much more than 800 bhp.

Funniest misprint I ever saw was,  "The BRM V16 could produce as much a 32BHP".............................

I wonder how many on this forum actually saw a MK.1 V16BRM in race action in the 1950's?. (a cue for more uninformed jokes there I suppose!).

For some reason the quote never comes up, but here is the first BRM joke.

How many BRM trustees ever saw a Mk1 BRM V16 in race action?

Can't quite see the joke (which really disappoints me, I must be slipping   :(  ) but the answer should certainly be probably all of them - as long as the race was not on a Sunday...

The BRM was like a lot of British ideas, brilliant in concept, a tad lacking in execution. As a mere 55 year old, I did not experience the early BRM's first hand, and rely on period reports, which didn't paint a pretty picture. Even when I did experience a BRM first hand (1973) I was stunned by the noise, less impressed by the speed and reliability, though Roger Williamson's performance in testing one indicated there was potential, just that the potential was wasted. End of the day, the qoute I gave, wasn't mine, but when looked at, in period, in conjunction with the reporting of the time, is apt, even if you don't find it funny!
